Chromecast w Google TV frame rate stutter

salputrid

This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

Hi, yes I use cast screen. On other device - 4 year old no-name chinese casting device from Aliexpress works perfect. So no problem with my phone. Im realy disappointed with Chromecast.

I received my replacement device two days ago and unsurprisingly the fault is still there, exactly the same. Not a surprise since everything points to it being a software issue, but we had to go round the loop replacing it anyway.

Is there any update on when a software fix might be coming? This forum thread is now over 2 months old. I've had the problem since I bought the device. It has ONE job of being a media streamer and it is not able to do that. It's useless!

Fyi, whilst my new Chromecast was away getting replaced I resorted to my 1st Gen 2013 Chromecast and the playback was absolutely perfect. It was so much more enjoyable to use. If it wasn't for NowTV abandoning support for that device I would absolutely be ditching the new device and sticking with the G1 version.

Please give news as to when fixed firmware is coming!

amh15 - the problem I am seeing is when casting or using the app within Google TV. I don't think I've even tried sharing my device screen since I got the new Chromecast, but as you say, I wouldn't expect seamless performance from a screen share.

Hi @dfluff

It's not that clear from the forum's layout but my reply was intended principally to help @borkov who said they were screen casting. I wasn't sure if they were trying to do a live screen share versus what everyone else here seems to be reporting.

Sorry if I created any confusion there.

I use screen cast. The videos that are on my phone are also laggy and sound is out of sync. On 30$ no-name cast dongle from Aliexpress everything works perfect. Its Chromecast that is causing problems.

Hi all, also experiencing issues with my Chromecast with Google TV.

The video stutters mainly on the Disney+ app (it’s not entirely smooth on Prime nor BBC iPlayer) and is unwatchable on Disney+. This is a new problem, it hasn’t existed until a week ago. Is it something to do with an app update?

Using the Disney+ app on my Samsung TV works perfectly.

I also have problems with the playback on HBO Max. It seems like it skips a few frames here and there, which is very annoying. My LG smart TV from 2016 it plays a lot smoother everything. I'm very disappointed since I've just bought the new Chromecast and now I'm thinking to return it and buy a Xioami MI Stick 4k if things won't change soon.

Hi amichie and stan4695,

I'm sorry to hear that you're also experiencing an issue. If this is only happening with these specific apps, please go to the Chromecast with Google TV settings then go to Manage apps. From there, look for the apps you're having an issue with then check if it needs an update. Tap on the update app option.

Let me know if that helps.

Rbn and havsgaard, we also received your form. Keep an eye on your inbox as our team will reach out to you anytime soon.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Unfortunately there is no update to install, so the problem persist. I experience this issue in all the apps that I use, even on YouTube (a bit). I think that the Android 12 update messed everything up, but I am not sure since I am a new user of this product ( yesterday I had received it). Also it seems that for me frame rate matching doesn't work at all. I mean by default it was set to seamless (which my TV doesn't support) and then I switched it to non-seamless but nothing changed. I see no difference whether it is set to never, or not-seamless or seamless. I tried switching the framerate manually in the settings and on YouTube, for example, where I can see that stats for nerd thing I observed that when I want to play a 50 fps video and turned the framerate in the settings to 50Hz it played better. I hope this will be fixed 🙏

Hi Paul19,

Have you tried the suggested steps shared on this thread? If you haven't yet, please try that and let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Hi Jennifer, Yes I have tried everything, alas to no avail. I  have now returned it as the performance is not acceptable.

Many thanks, Paul

What would you buy instead? I am thinking to buy an Xiaomi Mi Stick 4k but I am afraid to not have the same issues.

I guess You could have the problem with any device powered by Android tv. Personally I switched to the Apple TV and it’s night and day … (expected by the difference in price but still …)

Hello! Could you try to manually change the framerate of the device in the Display section to 24 Hz and see if movies on Netflix, HBO Max or whatever streaming service did you use plays correctly? If my suspicion is true this should help.  Let me know if that makes a difference.  Of course this is just a workaround, and is very inconvenient to manually change this every time, but... until hopefully will be solved we can't do too much.

I tried it already but it isn’t related. Moving to 24 remove the judder that we can have (and use to have on Android 10) when you watch 24fps content over 60hz.

So basically the judder that you can witness during traveling (if your tv cannot handle it properly with something like true cinema from Sony) This is why they implemented the frame rate match feature. Once it is implemented in the different apps you should see a black screen before the movie starts which indicates that the tv moves from 60 to 24 and another at the end to come back to 60

the problem I see on my side is similar to video games with perf issues. Meaning that the number of fps decrease and then catch up even when matching the 24fps

hope that helps

Update: I moved my Chromecast with Google TV (4K) to a different HDMI slot in my Samsung TV and the problem seems to have disappeared. Smooth video on Disney+ now.

stan4695

Is there any settings that you've changed ? On TV or Chromecast? I also tried to change the HDMI port but didn't help

amh15

Perhaps I lack imagination, but I struggle to see how changing the HDMI port fixes anything.

It's good general support advice. I had an earlier problem with on-screen snow on the Chromecast, and was told to try a different TV or HDMI port. It was a useful suggestion as it turned out it was an HDMI splitter adding the snow. The Chromecast was fine. But if multiple people are reporting the same problem since a software update, it's unlikely that all of them have a duff HDMI port.

Has anyone found a consistent time index in a named show where you always get stuttering?

havsgaard
Community Member

it happens from the beginning and is constantly throughout anything on a streaming service. However I have changed back to Chromecast 3 and now there's no issue ... same hdmi port by the way.

Playmo77

I was able to reproduce it constantly in the first episode of willow on Disney + (last 10 minutes or so when they were actually find willow)

amh15

I'm away from home and on a different Chromecast from usual this week. Just trying a couple of things now. I believe I get some minor stutter in Willow s1e1 around 47:00 when the shattered sea idea is scoffed at.

Perhaps more consistent is the scene in Andor s1e12 where the rebel woman walks down the stairs at around 5:25. She sometimes seems to jump position.

But on my usual Chromecast I've seen whole scenes go to a reduced frame rate.

@amh15 it's actually not terrible advice.. on some TVs different HDMI ports have different capabilities such as 4k ability, ARC, HDCP 2.2, etc. I've certainly had one occasion in the past where one device worked on one HDMI port and not another in the same set, but in this case I would expect something like a Chromecast to work seamlessly without requiring any of these extra features OR for it to be clearly documented that specific port features were required which, as far as I can tell, isn't the case.

As for consistent time indexes, it doesn't seem to be specific frames.. if I play the same 10 second clip several times stutters/dropped frames can happen in different points in the same period.

Hi. Exactly same problem here. Frame rate drop. No sound issue, if i look again the same scene, no problem. Use Philips Tv. Chromecast with Google tv, please fix it.

i can explain and give feedback if needed, happy to see i’am not crazy and other people see the same problem.

Glad I found this post but bummed to see there isn’t a solution yet. I have a Chromecast 4k running Google TV. It’s only a few months old. Watching Apple TV+ or Disney+ the video frame stutters often.

I followed all the troubleshooting mentioned in this thread: trying it on a different device, different hdmi ports, resetting, powering off, etc.

Someones know if google work on this bug?

For me, it’s a reason to get other device like Apple TV.... but it’s not the best solution, I have Google chromecast with tv, have buy this device and happy BEFORE Android 12 and this frame rate down bug.

cgtvdude

Same issue here. CCGTV worked great for over a year and the only change are Google Updates.... and frame rate destruction started about 2 months ago with Disney and Prime almost unwatchable. Luckily my Smart TV had those apps and streams perfectly from the TV apps just a shame unusable CCGTV now.

salputrid

It does seem to be specific to certain apps, most definitely Disney. The problem is considerably reduced when I cast from my phone. But watching from the Google TV home screen with the app is terrible. I also use Crave (here in Canada) and the problem is there too. Kanopy is flat-out unwatchable. Jennifer has been nice, but I cannot tell if Google or the app-makers are doing anything about this.

I'm surprised that so few people report this bug, Google must solve it. How many GCCWTs have been sold. I think after 2 months we should have had a patch right?

its bec ppl complain about it here istead of report to google support . im battling with them now but they need video proof . beq they dont belive me ....................

My GTV 4k seems to work fine for my apps after the update. However the new GTV HD I bought as a gift the video is jerky on Peacock TV shows. It starts out fine but after the first advertisement it comes back all jerky. The audio is fine.  I found I can press Back and then resume the show, it clears up. Also just pause and move back or fwd a few secs and play. It resumes normally…   until the next Advertisement then it starts jerky again.  Movies play fine, but no ads in those. Tested on 2 different ISPs on different TVs. Turned off frame rate feature and game mode. Factory reset. Nothing fixes it.  Other apps Netflix, Tubi and Pluto seem ok.   Peacock shows tested are Days of our Lives and Law and Order SVU. Always starts out fine but  after every advertisement it starts jerky again.  Both TVs  are 1080P 60 hz. (HD)

I have this same issue currently. Did you ever find a solution?

No . Google is looking in too the problem. Write their support and complain . So they can fix .

mghughes

I’ve just found this thread after searching for weeks for a solution. Same as others here, I have a Chromecast with GoogleTV HD, and the playback has been stuttering on all apps since I bought it. I have an older generation Chromecast that I’ve had for years that works fine.

I’ll fill out the form here….

I’m very close to buying an Apple TV, as the on screen interface with the remote is very handy, but the stuttering playback makes things unwatchable, and I end up resorting to using my old Chromecast dongle.

MisterFloppy

Also running into this issue. My CC with GTV is dropping frames during video Playback and its driving me nuts. Happens in Netflix, HBO Max and YouTube. Tried all the suggestions but definitely seems to be a software issue. Restart fixes things for a short while and then it returns.

mghughes

What are the chances of Google doing a product recall on these things?

I know it’s probably a software issue, but there’s already been a firmware update since I bought it, and they don’t seem anywhere nearer to fixing this.

It’s quite clearly not fit for purpose, a streaming stick, that can’t fulfil it’s primary function of streaming smooth video,
