Chromecast w Google TV frame rate stutter

salputrid

This happens across all apps some more than others.

I am using the Google TV interface.

This was not an issue with the Chromecast 3rd gen when I cast from my iphone.

Hi folks,

I'm sorry for the late response. This has been forwarded to the team and they're looking into this. I'll loop back in once we have an update about this.

Best,

Jennifer

Not yet, but I'm checking it every day before I start watching anything

Me too. Filled out the form. Incredibly disappointed. I have an excellent Nvidia shield, but really wanted HDR10+ as provided by the CCwGTV... but the judder is unacceptable. Apparently this problem has existed since October?!

When will this be fixed?

I’m afraid never will be fixed.

Anyone have success with other 4K Streaming devices? Roku?

I have a TCL Roku TV, so not one of the streaming devices. I assume they are similar/same, though?

My specific TV has some issues playing HDR content -- but that's a TCL problem, not Roku. I use Plex, Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime, YouTube, YouTube TV, and they all stream content without any issue. The performance of the Peacock UI sucks beyond belief, but I've noticed this across multiple devices, and it streams video properly, which is the most important thing

TLDR: Roku is a good alternative that never/hardly ever gives me problems

'Google' forum.

I have a Roku Ultra on another TV. It can cast like a chromecast but it doesn't work with all apps. I really wanted that functionality on my main TV which is why I use the CCWGT. Otherwise I like the Roku a lot. You can plug in headphones to the remote so it's quiet in the room and you still get to hear what's on. The UI is a bit slower than the CC but I think it's on purpose.

This is a ''Google' forum. People here want their Google device to work. Stop coming in here talking about buying other devices, when that is clearly not a solution. It's an update that did this. It was the best streaming device prior to. Please go elsewhere.  Thank you

Yeah. I'm one of those people wanting their Google device to work. It's why I added my experience earlier with Youtube and animated content asking if anyone else could confirm. I also didn't recommend anyone buy anything. Someone asked a question about a specific line of devices and I answered it. So I think I'll just stay here. Thanks anyway.

My apologies.  I replied to the wrong person.

When people come to this thread for meaningful updates, answers, solutions -- and then they see practically zero progress since November -- it's only natural that people talk about alternatives. We all want our Chromecast to work, obviously. That's why we're here. But, ultimately, people just want to watch their content and not be horribly distracted by persistent and glaring technical issues. This is the best place to ask about alternatives. I'm not so sure this is the hill you want to die on

What are you going on about? This is not the place to discuss alternatives. It's a Google issue, with a Google device...in a Google forum.  Have you ever heard of Reddit?

You're here going on about other devices...purchasing other devices, when that clearly isn't a solution.  This was caused by an update.  Not an inferior device.

You really don't understand?  This isn't anything but Google support!

I just checked that the Amazon Prime Video, Disney and HBO apps have been updated. I need to check, but it seems something has changed.

Maybe they are fixing the apps first and later they update the Chromecast

Can be the case that apps have to be updated to use the frame rate change. I checked on my device and I do not see any update for HBO app.

is there still a community manager or did they get deleted in the big layoff

On top of that I just noticed that HDR no longer works at 4k 60. It just streams at SDR. To fix it had to switch to 4k 30. Wtf Google? Is this a joke???? I am factory resetting this and throwing it in the garbage.

So THAT'S why my frame rate changed. Wow... At least I know why now? Sucks, but thank you

Both the native Tizen apps and my Nvidia Shield play perfectly without the judder.

I tried everything from triple resets to every relevant setting adjustment on the CC and the TV.

So, I give up. I find the 4k unwatchable due to the judder. Just packed up my return.

What happens when we are outside of the return period? I bough the device some time ago and didn't use it much, just a few tests and set-up. After half a year or so, I decided to plug it in, update to latest version and use it for some needs. I am very surprised at how much random playback stutter it has now. I can't return it anymore... and warranty would be pointless as it's a software issue.

Do I just sue Google?

Same sort of thing happened with my Google Nest. Google removed the ability to adjust the volume of speaker groups after being sued by Sonos. It made my home setup basically useless.

I contacted Google about a return and they said I was outside the timeframe. I tried asking multiple times. Then I spoke to a local lawyer about it. He looked at the ToS and said I didn't have a case. Google covers their ass on these kinds of things. I'm betting Chromecast has a similar ToS

Completly new chromecast tv 4k … to my dissapointment it has framerate drops which precious version did not have. From reading this thread it seem like google are unable to fix this so I’m probably just moving on to Apple TV instead and will not be supporting google products in the future.

Fase.. this is a good point. The problem I saw, and I suspect everyone is seeing is "frame drops". Technically, "stutter" is a different type of problem.

Mine is packed up and I will ship the return Monday. Huge disappointment.

For what it's worth, I bought a new 4K Roku stick and it fixed my problem. Frustrated google bricked this and offered no support. Wasn't even 6 months old.

I've had the same issues for the last several weeks. The problem is very noticable in sports events, but it is bleeding in to other apps now. The CWGTV 4k works fine on my 1080 tv. It seems to only be a problem on the 4k TV's. I guess I could limit it to 1080 on my 4k, but what's the point. Been using my Roku TV now and then as a result. FYI, I have 2 Roku 4k TVs with the same issue on each with an old device and brand new device. I've tried factory resetting, changing HDMI inputs, wired vs wireless, etc. The issue usually goes away with each change but returns shortly thereafter. I hate Roku's UI but it's the only option right now

Dang. I just tried 1080p but there was still stutter on mine

Same thing here. Initially, the micro-stutter was gone. Then after a short time of viewing, it somehow found its way back. Incredibly frustrating.

I have the stutter on a 1080p screen, but this is with the CCWGTV HD. I’ve had this problem since I bought it, when the HD version was released in September last year.

Same problem here with CCWGTV, happens mostly with all the Apps with 4K: Netflix, HBO Max, Prime, Disney+ and  is worst (almost unwatchable) in Prime with content that have HDR10+ (with a Samsung TV that is HDR10+ capable).

Before the Android 12 update was working fine, so I think the new version have serious performance issues that made the high bitrate content laggy, even the menu navigation feels laggy.

Using the Samsung Apps for now with no issue, but it's a real bummer to see that Google can't fix an issue with their own Hardware and Software in a recent device like this.

I can't understand why google can't fix it. And if they can't, why don't they downgrade the firmware?

It seems that when a simple solution is in close reach, Google doesn't want to look that direction.

Ask the Nest Wifi Mesh owners who have been begging for Google to add a feature that would reset the network once every 24 hours - which solves a common issue of devices and access points being knocked off the network. The reply is basically "we'll put in that feature request, but it would be better if we could figure out why the devices are getting knocked off."

I mean, that's great and all, but it seems as if whenever there's a solution right in front of their face, they run from it like it's kryptonite. It's almost as if they refuse to admit there's a problem.

Looks like a new update was released today, and in the description says: "Other bug fixes and performance improvement".

Not sure if this fix our problem, I'm going to test it today.

I just got the upgrade to STTE.220920.016.H1 (51MB) and tested with a 1080p movie that worked fine prior to the Android 12 update. Can confirm that the problem is NOT fixed for me. Movie constantly pauses every second (but audio continues, and it's not a buffering issue). Awesome.

Edit; for reference:
* CCWGTV is set to 4k60 output.
* HDR enabled; set to match content & 4:4:4 8-bit
* Framerate matching set to seamless
* Refresh rate and resolution switching both DISABLED in Plex.
* H264 max level 5.1 in Plex.

Good for you! No update is available on my device, yet.

I see an update for the 4K model but not for the HD unit.

My 4K device was purchased December 2021 and I don’t have the stuttering after the update to Android 12.  The HD device was purchased November 2022 and installed late December, the install updated to Android 12 automatically so I have no experience before update. It was jerky on Peacock TV shows but not Movies. I noticed the show starts fine but after the first commercial break it goes bonkers on the video.   I can fix it by pausing, move back a few seconds and resume. But it goes jerky again after the next ad break.  I do not have a 4K TV.   Others have tried lowering their resolution on their TV but they still have stuttering. I’m wondering if all the 4k units with issues are newer from around the time the HD was released. I’m starting to suspect the newer 4K models are using some of the same components as the new HD model. Sourcing different manufacturers than the earlier 4k models. And maybe the new frame rate feature doesn’t work well on the newer hardware. Just a thought. Since my older 4k model works ok before and after the update to Android 12.

My internet speed is slow 3 Meg download so I expect occasional buffering or even a frame drop now and then. I tried the HD unit on a faster internet provider with no change in behavior. So all this could be issues with only the new models of both units and the software update.

If anyone has an older 4k like mine, do you have the stuttering video now after the update?  Not talking about random frame drops, but jerky unwatchable video.

I do think it simply has something to do with how the puck processes pulldown. It only happened when they introduced the framerate matching option (that was useless because none of the apps on their puck use it anyway) and since then it seems like the puck just cannot do 3:2 pulldown correctly anymore, which results in increased stutter/judder and visible notable framerate issues on a consistent level.

I'll try applying the update when I get home later today but I'm also at this point just fine with using my backup streamer until Google releases whatever new version of CCWGTV that's on deck for later this year. Maybe that one will have a better processor, more ram, and software that doesn't botch pretty basic stuff like 3:2 pulldown.

For what it's worth, my 4k unit, purchased 25 November 2021 from Argos in the UK, has the stuttering problem. That's not to say your theory about new vs old must be wrong (who knows how long these stick around in the supply chain). But it's clearly not only recent units misbehaving.

Just installing the update.

Agreed, my 4K unit bough in Sept 2021 in US definitely has the problem since previous update and not showing an update available.

Add me to the list: The micro-stutter / judder issue was not fixed for us.

But we got their "improved" user interface, removing the Shows and Movies tabs, relocating them elsewhere on the home screen.
