Chromecast with Google TV 4K Bluetooth will not recognize *ANY* Bluetooth device

blueovalthunder
Community Member

I was given my new Chromecast with Google TV 4K as a Christmas present. I am discouraged with it beyond words. I have several issues with the Chromecast. The more important thing is that the Chromecast with Google TV will not recognize any of my Bluetooth devices. I have Logitech keyboards (K480, K400 and K380) and mouses (M317, M535, M325) that Google indicated would pair with the Chromecast. They don't, as well as any of my other Bluetooth headphones, Bluetooth speakers, tablet, phone, Chromebook, Windows 11,  *NOTHING* pairs, except the Chromecast remote. The Chromecast tries, it "sees" my Bluetooth devices, tries to pair with them and when I enter the appropriate pass code(s), the Chromecast does nothing. After 15 or 20 minutes of the Chromecast locked in the pairing screen, the Chromecast eventually shuts down. And also, the screen mirroring doesn't work, there is little if any storage with the Chromecast, the Home app refuses to work on either my phone, tablet or Chromebook. I am searching for ideas or suggestions. I have a feeling my daughters just wasted $50.

I have the same bluetooth pairing issues with my Logitech Harmony Companion (with hub), my Harman Kardon Onyx studio 7 and a no name bluetooth speaker.
Indeed bluetooth scanning may freeze, is unable to pair or dows not even recognize bluetooth devices.
The bluetooth speakers pair without any problem with different android devices. So you would think of a chromecast tv (4K) issue. But if the remote that comes with the chromecast is also using bluetooth to connect to the chromecast, that works fine.
I did install the chromecast yesterday. During installation, it upgraded to newer (I assume latest) version.
Of course I have tried the Google solution suggestions: power off everything and back on again and repeat pairing attempts.

Yes, all my Bluetooth devices connect with all my other Bluetooth receivers and transmitters I have. The only device my Bluetooth devices will not connect with is, the Chrome cast. The screen mirror/Miracast installed on Chrome cast, doesn't work. Half the apps that are pre installed on the Chrome cast, do not work. The other apps that are listed on the Chrome cast that one can supposedly get through Google Play store, are either not compatible or will not install. The Home app for Chrome cast with Google TV, will not work on either my Android 7 phone or tablet, my Acer Chromebook or either my Acer Windows 11 pro laptop or desktop. I am beginning to wonder if this Chrome cast with Google TV is just some expensive pink elephant Google devised because I can't see the Chrome cast device being this defective. But no one from Google has offered a comment on this thread, nor has any of my tech support requests to Google support, have not been replied to. I have been a long time user and have sworn my alligence to Google and at this point I feel like I'm getting blown off and screwed.

Hey there blueovalthunder,

I apologize for the late response, and thank you for being patient! I'd be happy to work with you to get this issue resolved, as I can imagine it's been quite the headache for you. First, if you haven't already, go ahead and make sure your Chromecast's firmware is up-to-date. Afterwards, if the problem persists, factory reset the Chromecast. Please let me know if you're still experiencing issues afterwards, and then we can get you in contact with Chromecast Support.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

I did the factory reset. Honestly I think it has made the CCWGT even worse. It wouldn't pair with its own remote. It finally did pair with its remote after playing with the remote for 30 minutes. Again, the CCWGT will not pair with anything. It seems to try. But, it freezes in the pairing mode. The only way to get it out of the pairing mode is to unplug from its power source. When I say the CCWGT will not pair with anything, I mean *NOTHING*. Bluetooth speakers, keyboards, mice, pc's, mobile devices, nothing. Not even earphones. The Home app doesn't work on any of my mobile devices. I have Android 7 on all my mobile devices and my Acer Chromebook is only 4 months old. The new Home app doesn't work on any of my devices. I downloaded an .apk file for an older version on The Home app, and that works. Although very limited. I can get the Google TV app to work. That's it. It seems every app I try to install from the app library (Google Play Store) either doesn't work or respond or after installition then the CCWGT tells me the app is not compatible. The screen mirror (Miracast?) is a joke. You have to install an app on the CCWGT that requires you to open the browser on the device your using, go to a url and having to enter a password/code in order to use the screen mirror. The security using something like that is a joke. I got this CCWGT for a Christmas present from my daughter's. They have the European version of CCWGT and they don't have near the problems I have with this US version. And from doing research on the internet about this CCWGT obviously there are many other people as discouraged and disappointed with their CCWGT. Having nearly the identical issues I'm having. I really wonder how much marketing and design effort was put into this CCWGT? I have been a faithful follower of Google. This CCWGT is a very disappointing device. $50 for nothing more than a fancy looking Chromecast device that doesn't have the workability the gen 1 Chromecast did. I'm hoping you or your support will get this device working the way it was advertised. Especially since the EU CCWGT version works yet, the domestic US CCWGT version is expensive crap.

Hey there blueovalthunder,

That really is no good to hear; there may be an issue with your device. Because it was a recent gift, you could consider having it replaced because it is still under warranty. If you would like to do so, please go ahead and fill out this form to have Chromecast Support reach out to you via email. Let me know if you decide to do so, or if you have any other questions.

Is this also the issue with my Chromecast 4K / Google TV? Looks very simmilar.
Perhaps other users did not try to pair it with other devices.

I have tried a list of different Bluetooth devices. None of them worked. My Acer Chromecast laptop (what is supposed to be compatible with CCWGT) doesn't connect. Nothing connects. Doesn't matter the brand name. In as much as several the built in and many the supposed add on apps for CCWGT either don't intall, or once installed, indicate the app(s) are not compatible, or they don't work/open, with CCWGT. I even went as far to see if any of this was happening with my gen 1 Chromecast. *THAT* unit still works perfectly actually better than the CCWGT! The new Home app is also useless. My phone and tablet are both Android 7. The Home app will not install on either of them or my Acer Chromebook. I was given my CCWGT by my daughter's who have the European version of CCWGT (They're in Romania). Their CCWGT works great. The 6 girls can't believe all the issues I'm having with my CCWGT! Let alone the girls got the CCWGT for me and they are disappointed beyond belief.

I was able to find some information and work around for the CCWGT issues on YouTube. One of the work around was the person purchased a 7 in 1 docking station, 60 watt USB c high wattage power cube and a high wattage USB c power only cable (not a sync cable). The individual who posted the YouTube video indicated he was having nearly the identical problems with his CCWGT that I am having. The individual indicated that he had his CCWGT replaced under warranty. The new CCWGT having all the same problems his first CCWGT had. The individual obviously has some tech backround. But I am wondering if the tech issues the individual offered in his video post, isn't possibly what Google needs to look into. Lack of wattage, lack of power, lack of storage, inoperative Bluetooth, RAM and memory inprovements, expansion, upgrading. Those where some of what indicated are the issues behind the CCWGT not working to its benefits. I think everyone with pc background knows what happens to any operating system when there is to little storage, RAM and memory. I'm wondering if this might be what could resolve these CCWGT issues?

Can you share the YouTube link?

Hey there blueovalthunder,

That is interesting, thank you for letting us know! Are you going to try the workaround suggested in the video? If so, please let us know if they help at all. If they don't, we'll want to get you into contact with Chromecast Support.

Best regards,

Jeran

I have to figure out what kind of money I'm getting with the workaround first. If it's to expensive, I will have request a refund and return to Amazon. The amount of money already spent and then having to go purchase other devices to get the CCWGT to work, I don't think is fair considering the advertising for the CCWGT showed how this new device worked so wonderfully. Not explaining that other devices are needed in order to have the CCWGT work accordingly to the advertisements claims, is a little deceiving. There are advertising laws against this kind of deception. You can't advertise a device showing how wonderfully it works without explaining that you need to purchase other devices in order to make it work the way it was advertised to work.

In order for some of the workaround to...work, the CCWGT needs a BT keyboard and mouse. Any suggestions for a BT keyboard and mouse that *WILL* work with the CCWGT OEM Bluetooth? I have a Logitech K380 and M585 BT keyboard and mouse but, neither of them work. Does anyone know of a BT keyboard and mouse that *WILL* work? Google doesn't seem to have any lists that show what devices will work with CCWGT.

I have tried with Logitech K400, but is is not recognized. May be because it comes with paired usb bluetooth receiver. I have not found how to get the keyboard in pairing mode. In the meantime I have tested with my Logitech MX Anywhere Bluetooth mouse. The CCwGT succesfully paired with this mouse.
I don't understand why a bluetooth keyboard and mouse improve how good the CCwGT works.

blueovalthunder: can you share the YouTube link or give the ID of that movie.

Hey everyone,

Just checking up,
Jeran

I'm still playing with this CCWGT. So far I've had to pay an extra $70 to get it working the way is was advertised. Several the apps that are on the CCWGT still either do not install, are not compatible or just don't work once installed. I have looked everywhere on Google support for a list of known workable Bluetooth devices that CCWGT supports. So far, to get some of the devices and items to work, I've had to enable developer mode, install a 7 in 1 powered USB C docking station, a high compacity USB C to USB C cable and a high wattage USB C power cube, to power it all. Yet, some devices still don't work. The one thing I have been considering is, since there is very little operating storage in the CCWGT (4.4 GB) over half of that storage is in use, that is what is causing the CCWGT to operate so slowly. I am attempting to install external storage with the hope it will correct some of the issues I'm having. It was odd that once I powered the CCWGT with the new higher wattage USB C power cube and cable, that in itself corrected some of the power issues. With the addition of the 7 in 1 docking station, also improved boot up and response time. The Google Home app, still will not work on any of my Android 7 devices, nor my Acer Chromebook or Windows 11 desk top and lap top. Oddly, it is working on my Linux Mint tablet. The Google TV app is working in place of the Home app but, it has very limited audio controls, if any. None of the equalizer apps available on the CCWGT menu are compatible. They will not install. The Bluetooth signal from the CCWGT is ridiculous. Pair a Bluetooth device or something that does work then, walk 3 feet or more away, and the CCWGT disconnects. Again, I would like to see Google develop a list of Bluetooth devices that do work or are compatible and don't require a seprate dongle and docking station to get working, like it was advertised. Again, I'm always open for suggestions and ideas to help here. Even some of the online data I have found, is either not current, done by people who either have no backround in technology or who have no idea what they are doing with this new CCWGT. One thing I don't understand that you might answer, my girls (who bought this CCWGT) have the EU version of CCWGT. They don't have a single problem with their CCWGT, like in have with my US version of CCWGT. Its almost like it's 2 completely different devices. How can that be? I really think Google dropped the ball on this, as do many people I hear and see leaving comments about CCWGT. Its is a horrible execution of a great idea. And I've been a faithful follower of Google for 20+ years. Google need to get their head and their a$$ wired together in this CCWGT. Particularly their advertising of the device.

I expect that a thread is closed when the issue is solved.
However I do not have the impression that we are that far.
Is this the usual way how the Google support works?

I have been working to resolve some of the issues that I have listed in my thread. Not only the issues I have but, as I have read on the internet as well as speaking to various IT people, issues that they have and share the same problems that I'm dealing with. Getting their ideas and suggestions and trying to work some kind of work-around, so to speak. One of my biggest issues, my daughter's live in Romania. They have the EU version of CCWGT. I have the US version. Their EU version doesn't have half the technical issues my US version has. I've been very frustrated with Google support for CCWGT. I sent emails to Google that I'm still (foolishly?) waiting for a reply. I have never had unsolved issues with any of my Google products, like I'm having with this new CCWGT. Its getting more than frustrating. The way this CCWGT was advertised to work, isn't even in the ballpark. I've had issues with CCWGT since I plugged it in! I think I've solved the boot issue with a higher wattage power cube (that cost me a 'few' bucks) and the install of a high amperage USB C to C cable. Just that has helped. I then installed a 7 in 1 *POWERED* USB C Docking station (*NOT A HUB*) with a 1TB SD card. I moved all my installed apps onto the SD card. Freeing up a lot of of very limited 4.4 GB internal storage. That has improved the operating of the CCWGT. But all the other issues I'm still having, are either unsolved or I'm trying to find work arounds. The overall Bluetooth operation is something I'm probably not going to find a work around. As well many of the Google Play apps that are supposedly compatible, I don't think I'll find a work around for that issue either. So far I've put an extra $70 into the CCWGT with still not getting the performance I saw or I should say my girls saw and have with their EU version of CCWGT. Google dropped the ball and bounced it few times on this design.

This is the message I have received from Google Nest Customer Care Team:

Hello Jos,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Customer Care Team.

I'm sorry about the hassle that this has caused you but let's understand this more.

The Chromecast with Google TV works with different Bluetooth devices most intendedly are Speakers, Sound Bars, AVR, Projectors, etc but not all brands and models, much more for all types of Bluetooth devices. Certain devices such as game controllers and keyboards are being recognized due to the number of users wanting it, but then again the Chromecast with Google TV is for Audio/Video entertainment use which would utilize most Bluetooth devices as an output device rather than an input device since the Chromecast Voice Remote covers most of such functions.

There are other Bluetooth devices that are recognized and supposed to work but experienced issues after the Android TV 12 update. Over-the-air patch updates are being sent to reported affected units. I suggest you send feedback via Google TV settings. Our Developers team and Engineering team are working on this and several cases have already been resolved but there are still units affected and new ones being reported. That's why as of now we still don't have an estimated time of resolution. Sending feedback helps with procurement of affected units. Your device will still work but may not have these functions yet until resolved. Thank you for your understanding.

For your reference your case number is 3-34980000xxxxx. If you need more help, you can contact us again and reference this case number or reply to this email to reopen your case.

Have a new question? There are lots of ways to get back in touch with us below.

Thanks,

  1. Hey, you ought to consider yourself lucky. At least you got some kind of email with an explanation. I haven't got anything like what you got. I got a request to replace the device I have, with a new one. When it's obviously the device and it's design and not a defective unit. When I see so many complaints on the internet regarding the performance of this CCWGT, it's obvious it's the device and it's design. What I have been doing is far beyond what most people would probably do. And further than any regular homeowner. Like the Roku device I have, plug in, set the requirements into it, and off you go. I didn't need to spend an extra (almost) $100 to get the Roku device to operate the way it was advertised. Again, Google really dropped the ball on this one. It really tampers with false advertisement. Bait and switch type of false hoods. The product should work the way it's advertised. If there are additions required for the device to work the way it's seen to work on the advertisement, then it's required by law that it is indicated on the packaging for the device as well, noted on the advertisement. But, what still has me completely puzzeled is my girls have the identical CCWGT. But it is the European version. My girls live in Romania. Their CCWGT works exactly how it was advertised. How is it the European (EU) version works so much differently than the United States (US) version does? That's something Google has yet to explain to me. My girls are planning to send me an EU version of the CCWGT and see if it works as good here in the US as it does in Romania/Europe. As it stands, this is one Google product I am extremely disappointed with. I really wonder if it is just the way the technical products made here in the US have fallen so far behind China, Korea, Taiwan, Japan. Its frustrating to say the least.

I need a link to this other thread, you're speaking of, if you have it. You indicate that the CCWGT is suppose to be an audio/visual device not needing a keyboard or mouse. That it's supposed to work with the Google Voice Assistant? The remote that came with the CCWGT doesn't work that good. Again, get the remote (or any other Bluetooth device) more than 3 or 4 feet away from the CCWGT device, and the CCWGT Bluetooth shuts down/disconnects. The Bluetooth signal isn't strong enough. Bluetooth should be good for up to 30 or so feet. I have figured one one problem and resolved it. There is no where near enough storage on the CCWGT device to start with. The power cube and the supplied USB C to C cable isn't strong enough or powerful enough to proper operate the CCWGT. As soon as I purchased a 50 watt USB C single outlet power cube and a 100 watt USB C to USB C power cable. *NOT* a sync cable. This additions instantly improved the boot up time. When before (with the underpowered power cube and cable) the CCWGT would take up to 2 or 3 minutes before it would respond to its remote. Now, the boot up, less that 60 seconds. After that addiion, I added a *POWERED* USB C docking station. *NOT* a hub. With that in was able to install a 1 TB micro HC SD card, since the CCWGT wouldn't recognise a standard SD card. I moved as many apps and data as I could from internal storage to the SD card. That has made the biggest operational improvement. As it stand now the CCWGT has 2.6 GB operating storage. Ironically several the apps that wouldn't install or where not compatible previously, they installed now and are working. Even though they are stored on the SD card, not on internal storage. I'm not putting anything on internal storage. The Bluetooth issue I think is unsolveable. I don't think there is anyway to boost the internal Bluetooth signal. The signal strength on the CCWGT is less than -20 dBm (0.01 mW). That's barely enough signal to get 5 feet away from the CCWGT device. My one hope now is trying to get an external Bluetooth dongle to work on the powered docking station. See if that works. I doubt it will work over the internal Bluetooth and you can't shut off the internal Bluetooth. Since none of the Bluetooth ear buds I have tried to get working, dont work, there is no private listening. As is the Google Home app, I got the app to install using an .apk file. The app still doesn't work the way it is shown to work. Yes, all my mobile devices run Android 7. The Google TV app works, to a point. I can use it as a remote when sitting in my couch, since the couch is more than 3 or feet from my audio visual system. I'm using an Acer tablet running Android 7 through my Wi-Fi. That's the only thing I can get to work the way it's supposed to, so far.  And, no, I got the one email from your tech support asking to exchange the CCWGT device. That's not the problem folks. I'm having the same issues as just about every other person I read complaints about on the internet, regarding the CCWGT. We need to work the problem, not just go exchanging things in the hope exchanging it will solve the problem. If you read your own complaint sections, you'll see there are a *TON* of operating issues with the CCWGT. Mine is not a defective device. Its maybe poorly designed and marketed. That's is one certain issue Google should have marketed as a Beta version so people might have a heads up that it's still in its engineering phase. Google marketed the device and never did the engineer or debugging. Its almost as if Google tossed something together, and are letting the consumer deal with or figure out the engineering issues and debugging. What's funny, in developer mode, even the debugging there, doesn't work 100%. Since I'm into about $100 so far with my debugging and re-engineering, and it's obviously working, maybe I should go to work for Google and get their engineers and marketing people back on the beam. But, then I doubt anyone would want to work for a retired 30 year Unted States Marine who had a unque ability to get something fixed that someone else screwed up. Please get this CCWGT on its beam. So far, Google has only disappointed me.

Hey there everyone,

It looks like JosVerboom was able to come to a conclusion with Google Support regarding this. If you haven't already, I'd highly recommend submitting feedback via Google TV to have the device logs sent to the Chromecast engineering team. However, if you've already talked to support, it's more than likely they've already done this. Unless anyone has any further questions or concerns about this issue, I'll close the thread in 24 hours.

Best regards,

Jeran

Yes, support has all my devices logs. But, most of my issues have not been resolved. I have been able to get certain items working on my own. As I explained the new higher wattage power cube along with a higher capacity charge cable and the inclusion of a powered 7 in 1 docking station has resolved some of the boot up situation. Using the docking station and a 128 GB TF card and moving all the installed apps to the TF card external storage (system apps remain in the internal storage) has improved the overall operating function and boot up. I have been able to get a Logitech K400 keyboard with Logitech unifying dongle to work correctly. Installing the keyboards own dongle into the 7 in 1 docking station. Also installing a Bluetooth 5.0 dongle into the 7 in 1 docking station, *MOST* my Bluetooth devices now connect to the CCWGTV. But not all of them. The installation of a file management app into the CCWGTV is required for the TF card to work properly. There are still several apps in the CCWGT app menu that will not install (even though CCWGTV says they're supposed to) the ones that do install, will not open, if the app does open, it freezes up the CCWGTV, or once installed, *THEN* the CCWGTV says the app is not compatible. Oddly enough Google Play Store doesn't always open and currently the Android System Web View app update (version 109.0.5414.117) will not update. I've been trying to get it to update. But, it will not update. It is causing 3 installed system apps that use web info, to act strange. The TV Web Browser ver. 6.45.007_51d2bac2_230203_gp will not install correctly (an app Google suggests is the best for CCWGT). I believe that apps issues are surrounding the Android System Web View update issues. And the issues with the CCWGTV remote are still present. The remotes lack of performance has not improved at all. The Android TV OS build is still the same. It has no updates. I have tried the factory rest every time I have installed hard or software mainly because the CCWGTV freezes up after any installation. If I reboot, it sometimes will come back up. But more often, I have to go through a factory re-set to get the CCWGTV working again. Once I get CCWGTV back working, it's ok. Getting the CCWGTV to boot up is a labor of love and patience. I check for system and app updates every morning. I find it strange that there hasn't been any app updates from Google for the CCWGTV, yet the same app(s) on my tablets, phone and Chromebook has had frequent updates. Its making especially the Google Tv app not work when needed and as for the Google Home app, I have [tried] to install it on all my Android 8 devices as well my Chromebook. The Google Home app either will not install or once it is installed, it indicates its not compatible with any of my mobile devices nor my Chromebook. You have no idea how discouraged I am with this CCWGTV device. What was shown to me that supposedly was to work, has cost me an extra $130.00 to get it working the way it's advertised. And the CCWGTV still isn't 100%. One of things that the CCWGTV was advertised to do was the group watching on NetFlix, Tubie and Disney+. That does not work at all. I was lead to believe I need a webcam in order for the group watching to work. I am currently trying to find a web cam that is plug and play and compatible with the CCWGTV and the installed Google Meet app. I was told once I can find a webcam that works, then the group or party watching, will work. I've not found a webcam that will work...yet. If you or anyone else has any suggestions on a webcam. And BTW, I've yet to hear back from support. I sent them a message about 4-5 weeks ago that I'm still patiently waiting a reply on. Hope you have a good day.

Hey there blueovalthunder,

It sounds like this whole situation has been quite the ordeal for you. I'm glad to hear you were able to resolve a good number of issues on your own. As for an update to the Chromecast with Google TV, there has been a new update that should have come out within the last couple of days, so I would check for that. Regarding not hearing back from support, I would send a follow-up email to the last one you've received so they are aware that you are waiting on their response. Finally, I'm not too sure what feature you're referring to by group watching. There are some third-party apps that allow for group viewing, but none that are native to the Chromecast. Would you let me know what app you're trying to use for group watching?

Best regards,
Jeran

Hey there JosVerboom,

Thank you for submitting your feedback! It helps out the Chromecast Engineering team by submitting your device logs for them to look into any errors being generated by the device. Looking at your case in particular, it looks like they wanted you to submit feedback according to the last email you received from them. In the meantime, if you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hey there again,

Just checking up on this thread; is there anything else I can address?

Thank you,

Still, *SEVERAL* issues which haven't been resolved. I've not had any response from support either. At this time there is an update (Android System Web View 110.0.5481.65) that will not update, even though CCWGT tries. There are still *NUMEROUS* apps available on the native CCWGT menu that once downloaded and installed, then CCWGT indicates that app is not compatible. After the recent CCWGT update, the CCWGT Bluetooth has become so temperamental it's difficult to know when it is or will work. Again, once it decides to work, dont use the CCWGT remote more than 3 feet away. The Google home app still isn't working or will download on to any of my Android 7 devices nor will the app install on my Chromebook. Oddly, the Google TV  app *IS* making a somewhat good substitute for the lack of the Google Home app. But the Google TV app lacks proper volume and tone controls as well any Nest device controls. And for whatever reason the CCWGT remote, the thing eats batteries. In the 3 months I've had my CCWGT, I've had to put 4 sets of new Everready batteries in the remote. I've never had a remote go through batteries like this CCWGT remote does. As I said before, I'm willing to work with anyone or any support in these issues. But, I've yet to hear a response from support. After, I believe 13 different emails to them? And again I stress, I am (or was) a huge Google supporter. I am *EXTREMELY* disappointed with the CCWGT the support surrounding it, as well how it was advertised to work (and still doesn't). I'm up for any suggestions. The CCWGT is to lite to use as a boat anchor. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
