There are three different possible Sherwood setups for the Chromecast with Google TV remote for volume control. None work for my Sherwood RD-6108 AV receiver. (The Sherwood remote works, so I do have a workaround. It'd be nice to need only one remote.)

Doesn't work with my RD-6506 either. I got the Chromecast specifically for this since my receiver remote was lost 😞

Hello square_eyes,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear about that. What type of Chromecast with Google TV device do you have, is it the 4K or HD model? Is it plugged in on your TV or on your receiver? What troubleshooting steps have you done so far?

I'll look forward to your response.

Best,

Jennifer

4K, plugged to TV. I'm trying to program the Chromecast volume buttons to control infrared receiver volume etc. It tries 3 different Sherwood code sets. None of which work.

Hi square_eyes,

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you please plug in the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) device on a different HDMI port on your TV? Also, remove and re-add your soundbar under the Remote and Accessories section in the Google TV settings then, follow the steps here to set up your Voice Remote buttons.

If the issue persists, plug in the Chromecast with Google TV (4K) directly to the HDMI port on your soundbar, then check if the same issue will persist.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks,

Jennifer

The issue is the Chromecast remote doesn't have the correct IR codes. It needs to be fixed on your side. It's not to do with the HDMI port. Also I can't connect to the receiver HDMI because it's not 4K. That would defeat the purpose of buying the 4K Chromecast.

I just need the correct IR codes loaded, as does OP.

Hello square_eyes,

I'm sorry for the late response and I understand why you feel that way. Some users were able to get it working when they tried to plug it in on a different HDMI port on their TV, you can give it a try. If the issue persists, you can also reach out to Sherwood support for additional help, and for them to check if the model of your Sherwood AV receiver is compatible with the Chromecast with Google TV.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Respectfully, that makes no sense. If the IR codes are not supported, no amount of plugging HDMI cables will help. I suspect that any user getting success in this area did so by activating CEC - which is not controlling the volume via IR, but CEC instead. My request is to support the RD-6506 IR codes. Again, respectfully, contacting Sherwood for assistance in this matter is pointless. What are they going to do to my years old, Sherwood receiver... somehow convert it to one of the 3 sets of IR codes you do support? If you need to talk to them about the protocol of the unsupported IR codes of the models mentioned in this thread, that feels like a conversation YOU need to have with them so that YOU can update the Chromecast software to support what the receiver is expecting.

Thank you for helping out on this thread, Jennifer!

Hey there square_eyes,

I'm just checking up on this thread, do you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Best regards,
Jeran

Well there hasn't been any help given. I have stated what I need. If you can't add any more IR codes via an update, to suit my receiver, then I purchased this for nothing.

Hey there square_eyes,

Like Jennifer mentioned, the best way to let Google know that your particular receiver doesn't have the proper IR codes is to submit feedback. The more feedback Google receives regarding a particular device needing support, the more likely they are to prioritize it.

In the meantime, if you have any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to address them.

Best regards,

Jeran

It really isn't a big deal, and entirely possible. Up to you I suppose.

I did leave feedback. I left it on the Google Nest forum.

Hey there square_eyes,

It really is appreciated, all feedback is taken seriously by Google and helps them figure out what changes they should prioritize. In the meantime, unless you have any additional questions, I'll lock the thread in 24 hours.

Best regards,
Jeran

I just tried with the voice control and the product name is stupid and too long "Google Chromecast 4K with Google TV", then it got the Sherwood receiver model number wrong. This is not a good way to give feedback. Why does Google name their products so badly. It literally trips up any effort to search for them. For example... looking at price aggregators for this product name mixes prices of older Chromecasts or the non 4K version. You'd think a company built on search technology would create product names that were search optimised. This whole experience with this thing has been a massive drag TBH.

Hey there square_eyes,

Totally understandable; in those situations, you are able to manually type in the feedback via this method:

  1. Open the Google TV app .
  2. At the top right, tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap Help & feedback Send feedback.
  4. Describe the issue.
    • The more information you include, the more it helps our team.
  5. At the top right, tap Send .

I would say that you can submit feedback regarding the device names and the feedback process itself, but I won't ask you to keep submitting feedback over and over again. I'll go ahead and pass up your concerns to a higher tier of support. Please let me know if you have any further concerns, and I'll close the thread in 24 hours.

Thank you,
Jeran

I will say it's a great product though. The addition of the IR capability in the remote is wonderful. It just doesn't work on my receiver and there should be a way to add new codes.
