Chromecast with Google TV switches TV on automatically

thevar
Community Member

My Chromecast with Google TV is connected to my LG WebOS TV on the HDMI port and CEC turned on.

What is frustrating is that my switches TV on automatically at random intervals when it is supposed to be powered off. Please note there is no timer set and this did not happen before I had the Chromecast. Also it has the latest update on it.

Very frustrating (and scary at times!). Can someone kindly suggest what I am doing wrong or can do to avoid this.

Jeran,

Thanks for the response. Tried everything under the sun but to no avail. I was increasingly getting frustrated due to pathetically poor experience from a Google product. I returned the product and got an Anazon Firestick instead. I am now very happy with Amazon Firestick.

Amazon is far better and superior in terms of technical support and most importantly customer experience.

Hey there thevar,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for your patience! Were you able to fix that CEC issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, as I know I would be frustrated by this issue as well. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • When did this issue start happening?
  • Does this occur when changing the HDMI port that the Chromecast is plugged into?
  • Is there a setting on the LG TV that affects CEC that could be causing this?
  • Does this issue occur when using another TV?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hello there Jeran,

I will reply to you point by point

1. Issue has occurred ever since I bought the Google TV

2. Changing HDMI ports has not helped

3. I have experimented with all CEC settings on the LG TV without any success. Not sure if I am allowed to mention this here - but I have never faced this issue on my Firestick!

4. I do not have access to another TV and have therefore not been able to check

5. Keeping the Google TV remote out of the range of LG TV remote reduced the occurrence of the TV switching on abruptly. Removing the batteries off the LG remote has completely stopped this occurrence (at least so far!). Unless, I prove this scientifically, I cannot say this is a fool-proof solution.

Hey thevar,

I'm sorry about the slow response time on this thread, things have been a bit backed up on the forum, but the responses should be coming out faster now. I've been looking into this issue a bit further, and it could be a couple of things. One suggestion is to make sure that you close out of all the Google TV apps before you turn off your TV, as the apps may be waking up the TV via CEC. Another option is to turn off the CEC settings on your TV, but I don't really see that as a permanent solution.

If you're sure that the Chromecast Voice Remote keeps waking up the TV, and you have no other apps running on the Chromecast, the remote must be sending some sort of signal. I would make sure no buttons are stuck, sticky, and have any kind of debris inside.

I look forward to your response on this!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi thevar,

No problem at all, I totally understand your position. If a device gave me a ton of trouble, I would have done the same thing. I'm glad to hear that the Amazon Firestick hasn't been giving you any issues. I'll make sure to pass this along, so we can look at improving our customer support and experience.

Thank you for your response, did you have any more questions we can address?

Best regards,

Jeran

I have exactly the same problem, but it worked by removing the battery from Google TV remote... And just using the tv remote. Not cool but as I want to use both remotes
