Hi Juliet Malambo,

Strictly speaking Google only support Chromecast being connected to the HDMI input of a TV, so bear that in mind. In any case, let's try these steps:
  1. Make sure your Chromecast is within 15-20 ft (4-6 m) of the Wi-Fi router. If you have a dual band router, try to set up your device on both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

  2. Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both turned ON on your phone or tablet.

  3. Turn OFF mobile/cellular data.

  4. Reboot your router. Most routers just require that you unplug the power source and then plug it back in to reboot.

  5. Reboot Chromecast by removing the power cable, then reconnect it.

  6. Restart the Google Home app.
  • Android: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app.
  • iPhone/iPad: Swipe up from the bottom, hold, then let go. Swipe up on the Google Home app. On older devices with a home button, double-click the Home button, then swipe up on the Google Home app.
  • Turn Wi-Fi off and on again on your phone or tablet.
  • Reopen the Google Home app.
If none of the steps above help, factory reset your Chromecast and then retry setup.

I am adding chromecast to home, and after all the steps, it says could not communicate with your chromecast.

You said factory reset your chromecast, but it is only possible if the device is already added. I cannot add the device at all. I did reset each and every devices required for this setup.

Very annoying and frustrated.

Did you ever figure this out

I did a factory reset with the the button provided, and it worked.

Confirming the factory reset by pressing the button on the Chromecast for 5 seconds until the blinking goes from orange to white, worked. Thank you

I have tried all of these steps but my Chromecast still does not connect to my phone. Is there any other support you can give.

There is a button on the device. Press and hold it for 6 seconds (or until the LED changes it's color) when connected, it resets to factory settings, and now you can set it up.

I did all of this and my phone/app STILL won't communicate with my Chromecast. Wifi works, I factory reset the device, deleted any of the Homes I had on my account/app. Nothing is working.

i will try this and get back to you. Thank you

What if you don’t have wifi and just want to use your iPhone data?

If none of the steps above help, factory reset your Chromecast and then retry setup.

How are you supposed to accomplish this when you cannot connect to the Chromecast in the first place. Surely a catch 22 proposition?

Clearly this is beyond Google to comprehend.
I have tried all steps, but cannot (when ultimately reach the last step) do a factory reset via the Home APP because it cannot connect to the Chromecast to do so. It doesn't show up in the APP.

Anyone have any other suggestions as to how I can connect my Chromecast to my Wifi, I've tried both 2.4G and 5G bands, but it will not accept the credentials and connect.

They don't mean to factory reset through the app. There is a physical button on the chromecast itself that you hold down. When you do, the white light will turn from white to amber. Continue holding and it will return to white. When you release the button your chromecast will reset to factory settings. Then follow the normal instructions and it should work as intended.

Can't communicate with chromecast message after saying connecting to add device to home

Both of my chromecast in the house have just started doing this. I have tried to reconnect both, get to the very last step (after the check codes) for it to fail

There is a button on the device. Press and hold it for 6 seconds (or until the LED changes it's color) when connected, it resets to factory settings, and now you can set it up.

This is now happening to me, too. Not sure what else to try.

So I ended up setting up the Chromecast on another TV (Toshiba) and then transfer it to my original TV (TCL), that seemed to do the trick. Used the same network, distance to the router was about the same etc

I've tried all the steps listed in this thread for my Chromecast Audio and it is still refusing to communicate

I had tried every possible thing to get past the message saying "could not communicate with chromecast" suggest here and everywhere else.

My solution came from turning my phones data off and then restarting my phone, then it worked instantly.

Hope this helps.

I reset the chromecast multiple times, made sure all of the devices where connected to the same wifi, turned my data off, turned my phone off, closed the Google Home app, and it STILL says "unable to communicate..."

I have a similar issue, but all my cast devices (cc ultra, audio, nest mini, cast enabled speakers) are not available, and the cc ultra can't be set up from my iOS device.
BUT if I use my old android phone, everything works flawlessly. And once I start the playback from my android phone, the iPhone can find everything and cast.

can we connect to chromecast now?

No, tried all of the above suggestions without success.

Same here. I tried all suggestions above and still doesn't work. Sigh

Had same issues, finally worked by switching off mobile data, restart phone, factory reset Chromecast.

I have tried all the above suggestions and gets all the way through and says it can't communicate with my Chromecast.

I tried all of this also, but finally found something that worked: When my Android phone was connecting to Chromecast on my Wifi (at the end of the setup process), I left the default listing of my Wifi  (name) and the checked box for the password. That never connected. However, when I re-entered my password manually, it suddenly connected properly. Now all my devices can see the Chromecast on my TV.

Hey there,

Did you have any more questions or need any additional help?

Thank you,

I figured out why my phone won't connect: If my phone is using wifi 6 it cannot see the chromecast despite it still being the network. but if I get my phone to swap off of wifi6 (to either 2.4 or 5) it suddenly sees it! Absolutely frustrating.
