Device Utility cannot connect to Chromecast

When setting up my chromecast, the Google Home app instruct me to use the Device Utility app to activate the device. 

After successfully connecting to the Chromecast's wifi network, Device Utility tries to connect to the device for some time, and then reports that it cannot connect to the Chromecast. No suggestions for troubleshooting are provided. 

How can I resolve this?

Any tips are much appreciated!

I was able to get this working by following the instructions in Device Utility, including connecting to the Chromecast's wifi network.

Then, while the app searches for the Chromecast, I changed my wifi connection to my normal home network (not the Chromecast).

Device Utility was then able to find the Chromecast and complete the activation/setup.

I hope someone else finds that helpful.

I'm having the same issue with my Google Home right now. Maybe the app isn't working?

I can't find the device utility in the home store. I have home previously installed and Chromecast wants to connect to an old router that's dead. I've performed a factory reset. I find no device utility

Your router should have different APs for 2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz. Some routers have a common AP and this causes this issue, in my experience. Try separating the APs. It worked for me
