Dolby Vision is too dark in Chromecast compared to native apps on TV

Pixelcowboy
Community Member

Dolby Vision is unusably dark using the chromecast. This is comparing to an appleTV and the Native app in an LG oled TV, using the same settings, and both of those look correct. Since the oled TV brightness is limited to start with, this make Dolby Vision unusable with the chromecast.  On reddit multiple users report this problem.

Hi @Pixelcowboy,

I don't have Dolby Vision to verify but it sounds like something has to be fixed.

Same issue here - Dolby Vision content is impossibly dark. Totally unwatchable even in a pitch black room. Multiple threads online about this. Getting ready to swap it out for another streaming stick 😞

Hey there brandonr,

Let me ask you the same questions I asked Pixelcowboy to see if we can find out what's happening here.

  • What model of TV do you have?
  • Does the TV have HDR? Is HDR enabled on the HDMI outlet that the Chromecast is plugged into?
  • Is your TV using any kind of Power Saving or Gaming Mode that could be affecting the screen?
  • Does this issue persist when changing the HDMI port the Chromecast is plugged into?

Thank you for your help on this, and I look forward to your response as well!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hey Jeran, here are the answers:

  • LG CX 65" OLED
  • Yes it has HDR. Yes it is enabled for the input the Chromecast is plugged into.
  • No, all the eco settings are turned off.
  • I have not tried a different HDMI port – I'll give that a shot.

Thanks!

No, I guess there is something buggy with the dolby vision implementation, I guess I'll wait for Android 12 and see if that fixes or improves anything.

Hey there Pixelcowboy,

I tried to re-create the issue on my own TV, but everything seems to be working properly. Let me just ask you a few questions to better understand what's happening:

  • What model of TV do you have?
  • Does the TV have HDR? Is HDR enabled on the HDMI outlet that the Chromecast is plugged into?
  • Is your TV using any kind of Power Saving or Gaming Mode that could be affecting the screen?
  • Does this issue persist when changing the HDMI port the Chromecast is plugged into?

I appreciate your patience on this, and I look forward to your response!

Best regards,

Jeran

LG c2 Oled.

The TV is HDR and DeepColor is enabled.

All power settings are disabled.

I've tested another hdmi port and the result is the same.

Image with Dolby Vision is too dark compared to native apps.

Hey there Pixelcowboy,

Go ahead and give these steps a try, and see if they help out:

  1. If your TV has a setting for enhanced HDMI, enable that.
  2. If your TV has a "best" HDMI port, plug the Chromecast into that port.
  3. Some TVs have an option for Dolby Vision that makes the picture dark, see if your TV has any Dolby Vision settings that could affect the brightness.

Let me know if those steps help at all, I look forward to your response!

Jeran

Not really anymore questions... it just seems like there's an issue between the Chromecast and LG TVs specifically. No steps to resolve this have fixed the issue.

Hey there brandonr,

No problem, were you able to give those steps I provided to Pixelcowboy a try? If not, please do so, then let me know if that changes anything.

Best regards,

Hey Jeran, thanks for checking back. So it appears my Philips Hue Sync Box was the culprit for the degraded quality.

Plugging the Chromecast directly into the TV fixed the issue, so I have to figure out if there's still a way to use it with the Sync Box, but I'll reach out to Philips about that. Thanks!

Even after the latest Android update to my Chromecast with Google TV Dolby vision is still way too dark compared to the native tv apps like pixelcowboy has started . I have completed all steps mentioned above and Chromecast is plugged straight into the TV and still no fix.  Dolby vision works on other apps such as Netflix but not HBO . Is there a fix or update on the way this is getting really frustrating as dolby vision on HBO USED TO WORK  when I first bought the Chromecast and after some months I noticed vision stopped working and has been that way for what seems like the last 6 months . I really don't want to have to switch streaming devices

Yeah there is something broken with Dolby Vision and the chromecast unfortunately. I just don't sue it except absolutely necessary (because there is no native NBA app on the LG).

Hey folks,

Pixelcowboy, could you please try to plug in the Chromecast into a different TV screen, if one is available and check if the same issue persists?

Mikevasq, if the issue is isolated with the HBO app, please clear its cache and data and reinstall it. You may also reach out to HBO support for additional help.

Thanks,

Jennifer
