Encryption on Chromecast with Google TV

What encyption is used on Chromecast with Google TV?  I am implementing this in a corporate environment for casting.  This device will be connected to a password protected SSID but looking for the details on the data transmission and how this is protected.  Any details would be appreciated.

Heya MikeUnruh,

I was doing some digging on this question, but sadly, we don't have any exact information about the encryption of casting from your device to the Chromecast. However, we can assure that the Chromecast is as protected as the network it is connected to. If you do share one SSID, I can only suggest turning off "Cast Media Controls" on your Chromecast for it not to be visible/controllable on other devices whenever it plays any content on the TV. Of course, this can still be overridden by casting another content.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more helpful, but if you had any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to address them!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hey there MikeUnruh,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for your patience! Were you able to find out that security question? If not, I'd be happy to help out! According to this article on Chromecast Specifications, the Chromecast with Google TV uses WPA2 wireless security. You can find out more about the devices in the article I linked.

I hope that answers your question! If you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

Thanks for your reply.  I was referring to the sending of data from the hosting device (TV, phone, etc...) to the Chromecast.  Does this go over the WIFI connection or is there another method once you see and pick the Chromecast you wish to send to when casting?  My clients and the Chromecast share a common SSID with a strong password.  The concern is can someone hack the data as it travels from the client to the Chromecast?

I believe this answers my question.  I would have liked more technical details on the encryption but I can live with this response.  Thanks again.

Of course! I'm sorry I couldn't get any more specific details, when I talked to the engineering team, that's all the information that was given to me. In the meantime, I'll go ahead and lock up the thread. If you have any more questions in the future, feel free to start a new thread.

Have a good one!

Best regards,
