Google Chromecast with Google TV and Samsung TV CEC issue

bozarj

Hi there.

I have an older Samsung TV that has Anynet+ CEC and a newer Denon receiver

The issue is similar to one reported by another user "vickenk"where the TV and Receiver both turn on fine when the Auto CEC power option is used in the Chromecast settings.

The issue comes when powering off. The Samsung TV setting only allows powering off the TV via CEC if the TV has "auto off" enabled in the menue. The issue is that the Google TV Chromecast issues a CEC off command to the receiver, which shuts off, and the TV, which as it is shutting off issues a CEC command to any connected devices, such as the receiver which has just shut off... But now is turning on again due to the TV auto off feature and subsequent power command.

Is it possible to have the Chromecast NOT issue the CEC command to the receiver when powering off? Otherwise I'm stuck with the receiver always turning back on from the TV Anynet+ disconnect command as a part of "auto off".

Thanks

Additionally, when I change the Chromecast settings to use the TV CEC option for the power button, turning off works as expected.

The TV sends the off signal to the receiver. However when everything is powered off and I use the remote power button to turn on, only the TV turns on, not the receiver.

Changing the TV setting to disable "auto off" the TV will never shut the TV off with the Chromecast settings of Auto CEC nor TV CEC.

Finally, if I had the option to choose multiple devices to be controlled via IR (both my TV and my Receiver) then I wouldn't have any issues. My old Firestick was able to do this easily.

Unfortunately I can only choose one OR the other for IR control. Leaving me with a pretty incomplete solution.

Hoping to get some help here on what can be done.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. Could you please try to plug in your Chromecast into a different HDMI port on your TV and reboot your Chromecast, TV, and receiver? Removing and re-adding your TV or receiver under the remote and accessories settings might also help.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

I've done those steps multiple times.

Nothing changed.

Still having the issue as described in my initial posts.

Thank you.

Hi bozarj,

Thanks for getting back to us. Could you confirm where the Chromecast is plugged in, is it on the TV or receiver? If it's on the TV, could you please try to plug in your Chromecast directly to the receiver and observe if the same issue persists? If you encounter the same issue, please reach out to your receiver's manufacturer for additional help.

Also, please take note that we can only set up the volume, input, and power button of the Voice remote for one device. Check the info here.

Thanks,

Jennifer

The Chromecast is plugged into the Receiver Directly with the HDMI output from the Receiver going to the TV.

The issue persists where the CEC Auto from the Chromecast turns off the Receiver, and while it's turning off the TV too, the TV then turns "off" all connected devices, which the Receiver is plugged into the TV via HDMI.

Therefore the Chromecast is shutting off the Receiver and the TV, and the TV is turning off the Receiver, but is essentially turning the Receiver back on since it was already off from the Chromecast.

When using the CEC TV option, everything turns off as expected, however when turning ON, only the TV turns on and the receiver does not turn on...

Hey there bozarj,

The Chromecast is connected to the receiver, then going to the TV. - meaning that the main device that the Chromecast can control is the receiver, technically.

We can only control one device at a time. Since you are using an HDMI output that is connected to your receiver going to the TV, there will be a miscommunication on the set-up.

What we usually recommend is to plug the Chromecast to the TV and if there is a receiver you can add it up as an additional device. In this way, CEC will work, since CEC only works with television that allows HDMI devices to be controlled with one remote.

You can still control the receiver if you want to, but you'll need to change the control first on the settings from the remote and accessories. Interchange TV from the receiver, then you can control that specific device. However, for the experimental set-up so that you can control both receiver and TV, that would not be possible as of the moment.

I hope that helps you out, and if you had any other questions, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran

Haven't had a chance to test it since we've been out of town.

Will need a few days until I can plug the Chromecast into the TV directly.

Hi there,

I tried connecting the Chromecast to my TV but then I have no way for the sound to go to my AVR via HDMI that I can tell.

Samsung UN46F6300 audio out seems to be only via Optical connection and not via a different HDMI from the one that is being used by the Chromecast into the Samsung TV.

I can't figure out another configuration that works better to get Dolby Digital audio from the Chromecast to my AVR other than having the Chromecast directly into the AVR while still having most control via the Chromecast remote for TV and AVR power and volume control.

Hi bozarj,

To confirm, do you want to route the sound to your AVR instead? If yes, you can try to use a 3.5 mm cable if your AVR has an aux port and has an option to hardwire. Also, you may try to use a Bluetooth Speaker and pair it with your Chromecast with Google TV.

Thanks,

Jennifer
