Google Home Assistant voice control not working anymore

SeanM

Hello,

For several months now I have been happily using my Google home assistant to voice control my Chromecast with Google TV. I was able to turn on/off my LG TV and Denon AVR, launch apps including Netflix & YouTube TV by channel name or program name. Life was great.

Within the last week, voice control has become unstable and struggling to work. It started with not being able to turn OFF the TV, then progressed to not turning ON the TV or find my TV device altogether. Google assistant responds as if the voice command has worked, but then nothing happens. Or so I thought, because after a 2+ minute delay, the voice command to turn OFF the TV would suddenly kick in and turn it off!!

Bottom line, I love my CCwGTV and controlling it all with my voice via Google home assistant, but it has become totally unstable and frustrating…PLEASE HELP!!

Thank you!

Maybe my problems are related to setting up the “virtual remote” in the Google Home app recently on my iPhone? The virtual remote works fine, and is pretty cool, but if it’s responsible for breaking Google assistant’s voice commands I want to know how I can uninstall the virtual remote?

Thanks.

Hey there SeanM,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that Google Assistant issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, as I know it can be a bit finicky at times. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?
  • Are all devices on the same network band? (Either 2.4GHz or 5GHz)
  • Does the Google Assistant on the Chromecast Voice Remote function properly?
  • Are you able to control your devices using the Google Assistant iPhone app?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran,

The main issue is that my Google Speaker and Google Mini devices are not turning on/off my Google TV. I have seen a 3-5 minute delay from saying “turn on the living room TV” before it actually turns on and sometimes it never does. Same thing with turning off. However, the Google Home iPhone app’s virtual remote for the living room TV works flawlessly and will turn on/off the TV without fail or delay. Once the TV is on, voice commands via Google Speaker work fine, like “watch CNN on YouTubeTV” or “Launch Nextflix”, etc.

My CCwGTV is cable connected vs. WiFi 5GHz for my other devices, thanks to Stadia and it’s awesome gameplay. Yes, I can speak “turn on the living room TV” into the CCwGTV remote and it works fine, and turn off works too. Hands free is my objective tho, and getting back the functionality that I had, which was complete voice control of my TV without using my hands.

CCwGTV says: Cast firmware version: 1.56.276477.

All this was working fine for several months and problems seem to have started when I configured the iPhone app’s Virtual Remote.

Thanks.

So, I just got off a support call with Google and doing a hard reset of my Google home speaker seems to have resolved the issue…YAY!!

Well, after working fine turning TV on/off, and all other voice commands from Google Home Speaker, it went back to not working again after about 30 minutes…disappointed!

I'm also experiencing this. This also includes Pause, Play, Rewind #minutes, etc. I'll give the voice command to my Google Home/Nest and nothing happens. Then 3-5 minutes later the command will suddenly execute. Occasionally the commands are instantaneous, but 80-95% of the time, they are not.
