Google Home cannot find my Chromecast device

Emdubs74

I have had a Chromecast for several years. Suddenly I cannot cast to it. Google Home cannot find the Chromecast device. I have unplugged it and plugged it back in. I have factory reset it. I have rebooted it. None of these has worked. My location is on and precise. Please help.

I have the same problem. But what is the point of these "comments on Google" if google or chromecast never reply and answer our problems. Shame

I have the same issue.  My Chromecast lost

connection last week.. tried everything.. went and bought a new on (4K!) .. worked for a day .. today it’s back to the same issue and won’t let me factory reset.

Hi folks,

Thanks for reaching out and I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Chromecast devices. Could you please manually connect it to the Chromecast SSID? Here's how: go to the phone settings > Open Wi-Fi and connect to the Chromecast SSID (Example: Chromecast1234, Living Room TV, Bedroom TV, etc.) > Go to the Google Home app and try to set it up again.

Fiveinacanoe, what's the LED status on your device? Are you resetting it in the physical device or via the Google TV settings?

Regards,

Jennifer

Hello Emdubs74,

Thanks for getting back to us. Have you tried the suggested steps I've shared above? If yes, how was it? Also, could you try to connect your Chromecast to a mobile hotspot so we can isolate the issue?

Thanks,

Jennifer

There is no Chromecast SSID listed in my Wi-Fi.

Hi there,

Got it. Have you tried connecting it to the mobile hotspot as advised previously? Also, please use a different mobile device and test.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer I recently moved and had no trouble setting up my Chromecast. Today my Chromecast says is disconnected and when I try to re connect it won’t recognize my device. Please help.

Last night while casting from Paramount on my laptop (the only way we've been able to cast for over a week), suddenly the cast menu bar appeared on my phone. When I tapped on it, it asked me to Create a Home. Not going there, because I think the whole issue is with Google Home and some change they made recently that's causing problems for so many people.

I can’t cast from my phone either anymore.. been a couple weeks now.  After unplugging and Re plugging my new Chromecast I can use it, but it freezes and glitches a lot.

Hello folks,

I'm sorry for the late response.

Micki, have you tried factory resetting your Chromecast? If you haven't yet, please try that and keep me posted.

Emdubs74, what's the version of your Google Home app? Could you please reinstall and reboot your mobile phone?

Fiveinacanoe, is this only happening in one app or across all apps? What's the make and model of your mobile phone? Could you also try to reset your Chromecast and test?

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hey there,

It's me again. I want to check if you still need help. Feel free to reach back if you do.

Best,

Hi, we are finally able to cast to our TV, but Google Home cannot find the Chromecast device. So we just don't use Google Home.

How were you able to do it

Emdubs74

I have no idea why we became able to cast again. Google Home still cannot find our Chromecast device but we can cast directly from Paramount, YouTube, and Netflix.

I did uninstall and reinstall Google Home. Also rebooted my device several times. See my other reply below. Something must have changed with Google Home because it does not work anymore.

Hi Emdubs74,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop and for updating this Community thread. Could you please tell us the version of your Google Home app and the make and model of your mobile phone? Also, have you had a chance using a different mobile device and check if the same issue will persist?

Regards,

Jennifer

I have Google Home version 2.63.1.12 and I have a Google Pixel 6A phone and we have tried connecting the Chromecast to my daughter's Google Pixel 6 as well. We can cast to the TV from both phones, but not through Google Home.

Hello Emdubs74,

Understood. What's the OS version of your Pixel phone? Please make sure that your phone is running on Android 8 and later. For more information, please check out this support website article

I don't have Google speakers and I don't think I ever mentioned that. The problem I have is that Google Home cannot find my Chromecast device. Sometimes I'm able to cast from my phone. We used to be able to cast from my laptop and my daughter's laptop, and briefly, from her phone also. Now we can only cast from my phone, and I usually have to restart it. Google Home cannot find my Chromecast device. We have tried multiple resolutions to no avail.

Hey Emdubs74,

Thanks for coming back to us. To confirm, is the mobile data off on your phone prior to casting? Also, are you casting from the Google Home app or cast-enabled apps like YouTube Music and Spotify?

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey there everyone,

I'm just checking up on this thread. Is anyone still experiencing this Google Home issue? If so, let me know what model of Chromecast you are using and what mobile device you are using that has Google Home. Of course, make sure the Chromecast and Google Home app are up-to-date on their updates, and if you are able to, try using another mobile device or tablet to see if the problem persists.

Best regards,
Jeran

Yes, I factory reset my Chromecast (1st Gen) and now when trying to set it up in the Google home app, Google home tells me my device needs to be activated through the device utility app. I go through the device utility app and it says it cannot connect to my Chromecast. My phone has no trouble connecting to the Chromecast wifi at all. I'm using a pixel 7 phone running android 13.

Hey there yodaloda,

Thank you for letting me know. Just to double-check, make sure you have allowed Location access as well as enabled Bluetooth, as this would affect connectivity. I would also clear out the cached app data on the Device Utility app. If the problem persists, we can get you in contact with Chromecast Support.

Best regards,

Jeran

I made sure that location and Bluetooth are both enabled, cleared the cache and tried again with no luck. Still says cannot connect with Chromecast.

Hey there yodaloda,

In this case, it may be best to speak with Chromecast Support. If you don't mind, would you be able to fill out this form to have them reach out to you via email? Just let me know when you do so, or if you have any questions.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hello,

I have the Pixel 3XL and chromecast gen 1. I recently updated my wifi and have since been trying to reconnect my chomecast to the new network. The Home app was not working and the Device utility app could not communicate with my chromecast. I factory reset the chromcast manually using the button on the side. I retried connecting to the Device utility app (since the home app said it needed to be activated before set up through the home app), but it still would not connect. My phone OS is Android version 12.
