Google TV Library tab full of blanks

SchrödingersCat

I have a Chromecast with Google TV.  On the "Library" tab, I have movies I do own in one spot, but then there are a bunch of blank spots before I get to another one with an image that I can click on for details.  Anyone know a fix for this?

Why the blank spots? Why the blank spots?

Hey there Schrodinger's Cat,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for your patience on this! Were you able to figure out that blank spot issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, since I know that isn't the most aesthetically pleasing thing. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • When did this issue start happening?
  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?
  • Does anything happen when you select those blank spots?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hey, Jeran!  I was at the point I figured I was just the odd man out.  LOL.

  • When did this issue start happening?  Right from the start.  I bought this Google TV to try it out.  FYI, I have my Base Library on my Vudu Account, but with Movies Anywhere, they are shared across multiple platforms.  Still, I have 3800 Movies and about 200 different Series.
  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?  version 1.56.276477
  • Does anything happen when you select those blank spots?  The Image box is black/blank, but it does have a light color glow of like yellow or pink or "pick color" when I'm on them, but nothing happens when I click on it.  When I'm resting on a black, the highlight does pulse a bit.
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?  Well, I logged into all my accounts and then restarted.  Still nothing.  Google TV updates have happened, but nothing that fixed this.  I even went back to Factory Reset and redo everything.  Still, same issue.

As a CTO that specializes in Software Engineering and Relational Data/Databases, I suspect this has something to do with WHERE the "Library" data is all coming from.  It looks like it's reading from either my Movies Anywhere account or Vudu account for the list of movies, but then only shows what would be show as my Library for the Google Play Store???  it seems like something has stubbed out a spot for 3800, but this area only resolves to movies in my Google Play library and won't show the data if it is NOT from Google Play.  Not sure why it would leave a these as blanks, though.

Hey there!

That is an interesting observation, I imagine you may be on the right track for this issue. If you don't mind, next time you notice this happening, would you be able to submit feedback via Google TV, so that the logs from your Chromecast device get sent over to the engineering team? That way, they can look into this issue further. To be transparent, it may take them some time to find the root cause and implement a fix.

Thank you for letting us know! Did you have any other questions or concerns we can address today?

Best regards,

Jeran

Sure, I can do the "submit feedback" via Google TV, I think.  I should be able to find it.  I'll try to do that tonight when I get home.  Thank you.

Awesome, thank you for that! If you do have trouble finding the option, you can always use the Google Assistant on the Chromecast Voice Remote to take you there by saying "submit feedback".

If you had any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to help out!

Best regards,

Jeran

I sent in a message from the Google TV help section.  I don't think there is anything else you can help with.  I'm guessing I probably have some kind of 'Outlyer' situation.

Hey there SchrödingersCat,

Thank you for doing that! Yeah, I haven't personally seen that missing library boxes before, it may be trying to pull data from a database that is no longer there like you mentioned. You could attempt a factory reset on the Chromecast device to see if it fixes that issue, as it may clear out some cached data that could be causing that.

Aside from that, if you had any other questions or concerns, I'd be happy to address them!

Jeran

Yeah, it's really odd.  I actually thought they are probably using some kind of local storage for needed data about the user and makes sense to setup the library like that locally.   I did the Factory reset thinking the local storage was corrupted in some way.  But..................No dice!  It's still the same.  LOL.  I do appreciate the help, though.

Hey there SchrödingersCat,

That is strange indeed. At this point, it may be worth it to reach out to Chromecast support, as they would have more tools than I would to look deeper into this issue, if you would like to pursue it. If the firmware is up-to-date, and the device was factory reset, the issue may lie on your particular Chromecast.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I'd be happy to address any other concerns.

Best regards,

Jeran

I don't think so.  I sent in the info and I haven't heard anything back.  It's still in the same state it has been.  But, thank you for your help.

No problem! Thank you for submitting the feedback on this issue. If your Chromecast with Google TV device is still within it's limited warranty, you may be able to contact Chromecast support and look at replacing the device to see if it's your particular model with the issue. Either that, or wait for a future firmware update that hopefully resolves it.

Ironically, last night I went to the "Library" area and now it says "Error Loading Library" with a Retry button.  LOL
