Google TV playback noticeably drops frames.

Repost, original post in Google TV forum:

https://support.google.com/googletv/thread/127489601/google-tv-playback-noticeably-drops-frames?hl=e...

My Chromecast with Google TV (latest firmware) routinely drops frames when the content frame rate is not matched to the chromecast's set resolution and frame rate. E.g. when the Chromecast is set to 4K 60Hz, watching TV in the ziggo Go app (25FPS native) causes frames to be dropped, resulting in a frequent and noticeable stutter. When watching a Disney+ movie (e.g. infinity war) that is 30fps native, no frames are dropped.

Switching the chromecast's resolution to 4K 50Hz confirms this issue, as the symptoms switch around. Movie stutters while the Ziggo app looks fine.

I of course expect a flagship device to work properly and not have these kinds of silly problems. I also do not really look forward to constantly changing the refresh rate manually.

Is there a solution in sight for this? For example an option for automatic variable refresh rate?

Cheers!

Lars

Hey there HolmLars,

I apologize about the late response, thank you for being patient! The current way that the Chromecast with Google TV is designed is that it gives you 2 frame-rate options, unlike the previous Chromecast versions. The older models just used 50kHz, and the Chromecast with Google TV added 60kHz as a new option. At the moment, the Chromecast does not change the frame-rate based on what content is playing, which I would agree would be a nice feature. I would submit feedback via Google TV to let Google know that this is something you'd want to see in the future.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more helpful, but if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran, thank you for your feedback. This is what I already expected... It sucks that the frame dropping is so noticable. I guess we'll have to wait for the variable frame rate function in a future update...

No problem, I'm real sorry I couldn't have provided you with more news on the subject, but rest assured that Google is aware that people notice this issue. If you have any more questions or concerns in the future, feel free to start up a new thread.

Have a good one!

Best regards,
