HBO max only plays through the TV or connected audio to the TV, not through the Bluetooth of Chromecast with Google TV.
I have tested on multiple TVs, same thing across all devices. Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and other apps all work through Bluetooth, but not HBO Max.
Audio through the Bluetooth is vital to my viewing experience as I only listen with Bluetooth headphones. I really hope they update this soon so the audio works properly with the HBO Max App.

Hey TheTallestTree, I'd reach out to support for HBO -- sadly, the app is lacking in so many ways and it's not a CCwGTV issue if others work properly. Sounds to me the codec is missing.
I've also found that when previewing a trailer on the TV, not with headphones, to determine whether I want to watch there's no sound for the trailer; if I choose to watch the show there's sound.

HBOMax used to work just fine for me. But now it doesn't. Video is just fine, but there is no audio at all. I've tried all the reset things and the reinstall things to no avail. Extremely frustrating.
