Have a TV, receiver for speakers and a set top box, chromecast will not control TV unless..;.

Hello braintrust:

I have an older Vizio TV with lots of HDMI ports.  I have it set up with a receiver so that the sound comes through stereo speakers.  Also, have a set top box.  Not completely sure what goes into what to make it all work, but I turn the power on to my receiver using one remote and typically leave it on and then when I click on the power button of the TV remote, the sound comes through the stereo receivers.

When I plugged the Chromecast into one of the HDMI ports, nothing happened.  Then I had an epiphany and went to the back of the TV and hit the input switch and the input options appeared on the screen.  I scrolled down to the next one on the list and suddenly it came on.  The whole point of this excercise was to be able to watch Thursday Night Football on Amazon Prime.  I registered it and voila, was able to watch the game.

However, I cannot switch back and forth from my Amazon Prime to regular TV without manually going to the back of the TV and using those buttons to toggle between HDMI options.  That is inconvenient and can't be right.

So, braintrust, any suggestions?  I pushed every button on both my TV remote and my receiver remote to try to get the input screen to come up with no luck.  One would think I would push a button on one of the remotes, be able to access a screen with input modes, toggle to the HDMI that I want for either Amazon Prime or standard TV and be able to switch between the two easily with a remote.

The end goal to all this is to cut the cord completely and install Youtube TV.  I'm afraid to do that yet until I can get this to work the way I want it too.

Thanks for your help.

Hiya SMOTU,

I see you also posted the same issue on this thread, but I'll repeat my questions here as well if you'd like assistance here instead:

  • When did this issue start happening?
  • Is the Chromecast's firmware up-to-date?
  • Have you tried swapping around the HDMI port that the Chromecast is plugged into?
  • Have you tried plugging the Chromecast directly into the TV's HDMI port?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran
