Have a Yamaha receiver, can't hold down the volume buttons

phunkodelic
Community Member

Everything works perfect on the Google TV remote except for the volume.  I cannot hold down the volume button to adjust the volume.  It only increases/decreases one click.  So if I want to turn it up/down a bunch I have to press the volume buttons multiple times.   I don't have to do this with the Yamaha receiver remote control as the volume buttons work fine on it.   Seems the google remote is not repeating the up/down command to the receiver.    Looks like a bug of some sort.

You might try impairing and repairing.. I have not seen this behaviour on my CCwGTV.  I do see a Reddit post about this (also with a Yamaha receiver). Odd thing is they said it started after a factory reset, but they do not follow up on a fix.  You might try a factory reset as well, it may work ?   https://www.reddit.com/r/Chromecast/comments/offloa/holding_the_volume_button_on_the_ccwgtv_remote/

I saw that in my searching, and that does not work for me.   This seems to be a bug with the Google Remote and older Yamaha receivers.   How does one put a bug fix request in for the google remote?

You can go into settings help and feedback send feedback and leave a note there.  One other question is how is your remote setup so settings remote and accessories, set up remote buttons.  For volume control is it infrared,or CEC, and is the device listed as your receiver or your tv?  Maybe try switching to your tv via IR and see if that works.  You could set your receiver to a comfortable volume, and make adjustments from the TV that way.  Not having a Yamaha receiver I can't test for you but I know with my previous soundbar it didn't work well with CEC and I ended up leaving it at midrange volume and controlling volume through the TV, it seemed to work.

Glad you didn't shut down the thread, because I'm having this same exact issue. The remote worked perfectly with my older Yamaha receiver, repeating the volume command when I held down the buttons. I recently had to change the batteries in my remote and lost the programming. No big deal I thought, and reprogrammed the remote to the receiver. But now the volume button commands do not repeat when held.

Hi Wrangler,

just reading your post, I am wondering if resetting and repairing the remote will help at all since you said it worked before you changed your batteries?  Apologies if I misunderstood!

No it doesn't. I've tried it many times. And still to this day, Google has yet to fix this issue. Big surprise.

After setting up my Chromecast TV remote to pair with my Yamaha Receiver's volume mapping,  I need to continuously hit the volume key dozens of times to get the volume to where I need it to be ( as apposed to just holding the volume key down and having the volume continuously update until the desired volume is reached). When I chose the Yamaha key mapping I selected the first mapping option that was provided ( non of the other mappings options worked ) .

I imagine it may be very simple for the Chromecast developers to add a second mapping that works similar to the first but repeats the held volume key. This is assuming that the key mapping isn't broken.

My Chromecast and Remote are both up to date in their firmwares. Also I found a thread on Reddit with similar situation to mine.

Same story here. It used to work, but doesn't repeat any more as of recently. Yamaha RX-V385.

Hi folks,

Sorry for the late response. Is the issue isolated when pressing the volume button on the remote? Do the other buttons work? Please try to remove your Yamaha receiver under Remote and Accessories setting in the Google TV and re add it. Resetting your Voice Remote might also help.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hey there,

How's it going — did those steps help?

Regards,

Jennifer

It did not help. I've tried it a few times. The buttons do work but it's just not repeating the volume command signal. Typically when you hold a remote to a device and hold the volume up button the volume should continuously rise on the device. Just to clarify what is happening is that the volume is NOT continuously rising but rather removing up one notch with every press. This is useless since it take like 20 to 50 notches to get the volume to adjust decently. So instead of holding the volume button until the desired volume is reached I have to click it repeatedly which is not ideal

Hi, have you tried disabling something called 'switch access' under 'accessibility options? This worked for me. I had the same problem where the g10 remote for 4K Google TV Stick wouldn't register volume up-down continous pressing (holding up or down). That setting prevented that  function it seems. I must have turned it on not knowing what it is, cause it just started one day while working fine for months. Anyway, hope this helps someone, I was going crazy myself there for a week.

I was able to get this working as desired by setting the Volume buttons to act in CEC mode. Which effectively sends the signal from the Chromecast into my receiver via HDMI. Works well enough.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my receiver doesn't have CEC support

Hey there Janimator0,

I apologize about the late response on this thread, but in this scenario, I'd recommend you submit feedback via Google TV. The buttons do vary from receiver to receiver, so I would send feedback of your particular setup to let Google know that the IR Volume buttons aren't function properly.

I'm sorry I couldn't have been more help, but if you had any more questions or concerns, please let me know.

Best regards,

Jeran

No more questions from me. Hopefully they can fix the issue soon. What's the link to send the bug report?

I have a "Chromecast with Google TV" attached to HDMI 3 on a Samsung TV model UN60H6350AF connected by fiber TOSLINK to a Yamaha HTR-5240.

Previously I could use the Chromecast remote to control the Yamaha's volume smoothly by pressing and holding volume up or volume down. Now it only sends the command briefly when pressing and holding the button. I checked the IR emitter with my phone's camera and I can see that it only shines momentarily and then stops.

I've also configured the Chromecast remote power button for the Yamaha receiver and it works. Curiously if I press and hold the power button and view the IR emitter in my phone's camera I can see that it continues to flash.

The only thing that I know changed during this time is I've changed the batteries.

However, I have a second Chromecast with Google TV and configured it for this same Yamaha HTR-5240 and it also only briefly send volume control even if I hold the buttons.

The Yamaha's original remote continues to send IR volume control, as determined by the volume continuing to go up or down and the IR emitter shining in my phone's camera.

The first Yamaha AV Receiver selection in the Chromecast remote button setup routine is the only one that I get any control from. I also got the same brief volume control when trying the first Yamaha sound bar buttons. I got no control when trying the Yamaha TV buttons.

Thank you for posting this. My remote used to work with my Yamaha, but I had to reset the remote and the codes available weren’t working. Your post made me try hitting the vol buttons repeatedly, and that’s a halfway decent band-aid until google can fix what they broke. 😐

I'm having the same issue with my Yamaha HTR-2071 receiver. Reported as Feedback in the Google Home app. 0.5db volume increments per button press is so frustrating!

Hi folks,

Sorry for the late response. We are currently investigating this issue. Try these steps and let us know how it goes.

Reset the remote, once done, go to remote settings and try to set up the volume. Check the steps below on how to reset your remote.

A factory reset will reset the Chromecast voice remote to its default factory settings.

Note: This action will clear your data and can't be undone.

  1. (Optional) Check that the batteries in your Chromecast voice remote have charge remaining.
  2. Remove the batteries from the remote.
  3. Press and hold the Home button.
  4. While holding the Home button, reinsert the batteries.
  5. Hold the button while the LED light is solid.
  6. When the light starts pulsing, release the button.

If this did not work please submit a feedback

Best,

Juni

Hi,

Here is what I have tried, neither fixed the issue:

1. Perform factory reset on remote as above. Set up volume in remote settings.

2. Perform factory reset on remote as above. Apply remote update. Set up volume in remote settings.

Unfortunately still no change. Remote resets to firmware 24.7.

Hi Juni,

Did all that, struggled to get it re-connected for a while but eventually got it sorted out but no luck... still has the same issue for me as well!  All other remotes work 100% with the Yamaha volume except Google's (this includes 3rd party remotes such as Logitech and cheap eBay remotes)... Just to be clear I use the remote in IR mode with the amp so it's talking directly from the Google remote to the amp and NOT via HDMI..etc

Hope Google can get this fixed up soon!

I am also experiencing this issue.  Continuous volume up/down while holding buttons down stopped working after upgrading Chromecast to Android 12 and factory reset.

The above steps did not help.

My amplituner:  Yamaha RX-V485

I'll say that I've reset and reprogrammed the remote with no luck. It's just frustrating that it was working totally fine when I first set it up. Looks like it might be a widespread issue with these older receivers.

There is no solutions other then to have google address the problem.  My guess is that when you reloaded your remote, it probably also received a firmware update that broke it.  This thread should remain open as others have this issue, and google has not provided a solution.  I work in IT and if I close trouble tickets without a solution or work around it does not reflect too good on my performance.  That being said thanks for the help you have provided as I know this is not a issue that you alone can fix.

What I would recommend in this scenario, if you have the time, is that you re-create the issue, then submit feedback using Google Home with logs enabled. That way, the device logs will be sent up to the engineering team to see if they can hunt down the cause of this issue.

Thank you for your patience on this!

Same problem with new Yamaha receiver A6A, IR mode only increases/decreases one click. CEC MODE can’t control A6a’s volume via google remote. The streaming function is working to turn A6a on by phone so that mean CEC for video is good but not for volume control. Just changed from fire tv stick 4K and it didn’t have this volume control problem ever.

Maybe someday google will wake up and smell the coffee and supply a fix for this.  As of now I still have this issue.

Same issue here: Older Yamaha receiver connected via IR. Stopped working after new remote was paired.

I'm using a newer Yamaha receiver, the R-N803. My LG magic remote has no problem with "long-press" volume control. Chromecast with Google TV remote does. It had no issue with my old Sony receiver.

We are also having this same issue after pairing a new Chromecast Remote. Receiver is Yamaha HTR-6090. We did not have any issues with the original remote that came with the Chromecast (now dead), only since pairing the replacement.

I also just got a new google chromecast and would like to know if there is a solution out there. I really wish google would take these request seriously. I know that, support is highly appreciated for me and I may turn to other vendors for solutions in both my personal and commercial endeavors.
