My previous version plugged into the back of the TV (didnt need external power source) would work without a remote and worked well with my nest mini…
I just “upgraded” to the latest version and its like google has gone backwards with this product, am I missing something?

Google always discouraged using the USB ports on TV. Most of those ports are not designed to power a small computer and are underpowered.
The newest Chromecast with Google TV device now includes a remote because people have been asking for a version they can run without having to use a phone or tablet. Personally, it works great for my family. It's a different product for a different situation. My family loves that I can load a bunch of services on it and they can just go ahead and stream content directly.
You can still get the other style round Chromecast that does not require a remote. Google has not discontinued it.
