Mirroring an App in my Samsung phone using mobile network

TrickyNicky

Please note, I am not very tech savvy at all.   Can someone please advise me what I need to do.  I am having several issues setting up my Chromecast to mirror my Android phone screen, via a projector, onto a big screen (not a TV).  I teach CPR on special manikins which give students feedback on their performance.  I have a special App on my Samsung phone allowing me to connect to up to 6 manikins.  I need to mirror the App image on my phone screen so students can see their performance on a big screen and make any necessary corrections to their technique.

1) I successfully managed to mirror my phone screen, via my projector, to a big white screen, using the Google Home App and my home WiFi today.  Unfortunately, after I clicked 'stop mirroring' I haven't been able to go back in as the 'tile' for the device is nowhere to be found.  When I open Google Home App the instructions say 'just click on the tile for your device'.   It should be there, it was there earlier today, but it isn't.  I try and search for the Chromecast again but it can't find it.

2) I do not always have access to WiFi (i.e. in Scout huts) so need to use Chromecast with my phone mobile network.  I cannot follow the guidance on this website as I do not understand the instructions i.e. it says ensure your phone is on the same network as my chromecast device. How do I do this having previously set it up using the home WiFi.

3) The Google Home App keeps asking me to set up rooms and add contacts etc.  It assumes I am using the Chromecast device in my home and setting it up for the Chromecast just once.  Usually, however, I teach in many different locations.  I could be anywhere in the UK, though usually in Scotland.  How do I set up a 'Home' which isn't a single place or will I have to set it up every new place I go to teach?  I thought maybe my mobile phone could be a 'room' so once set up, I could find it again next time.  Not sure if this is possible.  I read about using it as a guest but 2 hours isn't enough.  Any ideas on what I can try?

Maybe Chromecast isn't the answer but neither does using a USB-C to HDMI connector between my phone and the projector. It should, but it doesn't.  It is very frustrating and I swear I'm going mad!!!  If anyone can help I would be extremely grateful.  Thank you.

Hi TrickyNicky,

Thanks for reaching out. If you set up your Chromecast using your home Wi-Fi network, then the devices should be connected to the same Wi-Fi network so it can communicate with each other. Please take note that Chromecast devices can remember one network at a time.

If you do not always have access to the home network, try to re-setup your Chromecast using your mobile hotspot. You need to have two phones to do this.

Note: Your device may fail to connect as a hotspot isn’t recommended to use.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer

Sorry for the lack of response but my husband had a bad accident a week ago and in hospital a long way from home. I have neglected my emails, sorry.

I really want to mirror without Chromecast if possible as I do not always have WiFi or even a phone signal where I run my courses. It should be possible with a USB-C to HDMI cable from my Samsung phone.  However, it seems that the problem is my BenQ projector as it isn't MHL compliant, so I cannot mirror without Chromecast. I have decided, to avoid having to set up Chromecast before a course, when I have limited time to set up before the course starts, that the USB-C to HDMI is still what I want. I am therefore buying a new projector. Fingers crossed this will then solve the issue.

I really appreciate your help. I struggle with technology at the best of times and probably need a lesson in Chromecast before I would ever feel happy using this. I have managed it once but next time I came to use it, it wouldn't work. I can't be in this situation when I have a deadline. I will therefore track down a suitable projector as soon as I have time.

Thanks again and apologies for the delay in replying.

Kind regards
TrickyNicky

Hi there,

No problem at all and I'm sorry to hear about that. I hope he feels better now.

Chromecast devices will only work if it's connected to a Wi-Fi network. You can also visit this support website article to learn more about mirroring your phone to the TV.

Let me know if you have other questions and concerns.

Thanks,

Jennifer

Thank you,

Hi Jeran,

Thank you. I am still struggling with Chromecast. Can you advise re the following?
1. I have downloaded the Google Home app but can't find the icon on my screen. It is installed.
2. When I open Google Home the projector name is at the top of the screen but there is no tile of the device I wish to use. Do I need to plug the projector in before opening the app etc for this to be visible. It was there on the one occasion I manged to use Chromecast but subsequent tries the tile has disappeared.
3. When I open the Google Home app it just asks me to 'Set up household contacts' and 'Invite home member'.  It also states 'you don't have any rooms yet. Add your devices to see everything in one place'. I have no idea what or why I need contacts or home members or why I need a room. Can you clarify.

Many thanks
TrickyNicky

Hey TrickyNicky,

Sure thing! Let me go through each point, one at a time:

  1. If you are using an Android, you can find the Google Home app after you installed it either by searching for it again in the Google Play app, or by opening the "All Apps" menu. Check out this guide for more details.
  2. Make sure the projector is turned on and connected to the same Wi-Fi that your phone is connected to for Google Home to use it properly. I would do it before you intend to use the Google Home app.
  3. Here are more details on adding household members and rooms. Adding household members is only necessary if you have multiple people in your home that would want to use their own Google Home app. Adding a room makes it easier to use the Google Assistant, so you have separate devices by room. Neither of the two options are mandatory if you don't want to set them up.

I hope that answers your questions! Let me know if you had any more, we're always happy to help out.

Best regards,

Jeran
