Post A12 update: Black screen on startup, 720x480 error message on reboot, frameskips on 24/23.976fps

For what it's worth, the Chromecast is plugged directly into my AVR (Yamaha V4A) which is going into a 4K TCL 5 series TV from 2019.

Fairly frequently since the update this has been happening:

  1. Powering on the TV with the Chromecast remote works perfectly fine as usual, but the Chromecast is now sending nothing but a black screen, and the remote does nothing. The Chromecast must be unplugged and plugged back in before it will send an image again.

  2. Sometimes, powering on the TV will instead lead to the Chromecast throwing a black screen for a few seconds, before a stretched out, fuzzy image appears notifying me that it's incapable of working at 720x480 resolution, and forcing me to the "Display Resolution" page to select any other setting.

  3. Framerates on 24/23.976fps material are now choppy. Not egregiously choppy, but it's guaranteed that every 30 seconds or so, there will be a slight hitch or two, especially noticeable during panning movements with the camera. Note: this is happening AFTER making sure to turn off the new "Match Frame Rate" settings in the options (setting it to never). I'm going to try reverting those settings to default to see if that stops the brief/consistent hitching I'm seeing.

My Chromecast has never thrown an unresponsive black screen at all before this update, and the 720x480 thing was a total surprise (it's since happened two more times since the update, which I got about a week ago). I made sure, once it updated, to turn off the framerate matching setting before running any apps after reading that basically no apps used it, and I'm wondering if maybe that's somehow affecting the way the puck is processing 24/23.976 video now?

adding updates to this: Prior to the update the chromecast was sending 12-bit 4:2:2 to the TV. Post-update, it auto selects 8-bit 4:4:4: and any attempts to change it from that revert the second you hit "OK"

Hey there Stumpcity,

I apologize for the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that Chromecast issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, as it sounds like quite the headache with all those problems. First, I would check to see if there are any more updates that may help with the issue. Then, I would plug the Chromecast directly into the TV's HDMI port to see if the problems still persist. Then, let me know if this is happening in any specific apps, or if it is happening everywhere.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran
