Problem playing x265 via KODI with Chromecast with Google tv

Dragon548

Hi,
I recently purchased a Chromecast with Google tv. I previously had a Xiaomi Mibox 3 and overall I'm happy with the much faster Chromecast.
I use this one in particular to play videos stored on my Synology NAS via KODI.
I have no problem playing x264 videos of around 20 gigs. Reading a file in x265 (HEVC) format does not work correctly, however: it is very jerky (an image every 2/3 seconds and sound does not work correctly). I tried with several files and the result is always the same.
My old Mibox 3 played these files perfectly, so I think the Chromecast must be able to do this too.
Can you help me ?
Thanks in advance.

Hey there Dragon548,

Welcome to the Chromecast Community Forum! According to this article on supported media types for Chromecast, the Chromecast with Google TV does support HEVC / H.265 Main and Main10 Profiles up to level 5.1 (4Kx2K@60fps). Let me just ask a couple of questions about your set-up:

  • If you cast the same file using a different media player, does the same issue occur?
  • If you cast the same file using a different device, such as a computer or tablet, does the same issue occur?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran,

Thanks for your feedback.
The files work fine if I stream them on my old Xiaomi Mibox 3 or on my PC with VLC.

Hey Dragon548,

No problem at all! In this case, it looks like the issue may be isolated with KODI. You may need to reach out to KODI support to see if they are aware of any casting issues on their side, as you mentioned the same files work correctly with the Mi Box 3 and your PC with VLC.

I hope this helps, and if you had any other questions or concerns, please let me know.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi Dragon548,

I'm sorry to hear that you're still experiencing the same issue. Have you tried reaching out to KODI support as per advised by Jeran? If yes, how was it? You may also try to reboot your Chromecast and plug it in on a different HDMI port on your TV. Trying on a different TV screen might also help.

Thanks for the help here, Jeran.

Regards,

Jennifer

Sure thing — sounds like a plan! I'll wait for your update.

Best,

Hello,
The KODI forum replied that it seems that the problem comes from the Chromecast and the fact that I have an SDR TV.
"here appears to be a known issue with UHD HDR replay in SDR on the Chromecast. (i.e. it doesn't have hardware accelerated tone mapping - at least within Kodi - currently)"

Hi Dragon548,

Thanks for the information. This could be about the compatibility of the devices. I'd suggest you send feedback about this using the Google Home app to let the Google Engineering team know about this. Here's how

Thanks,

Jennifer
