Set up Chromecast

alanbriggs

I have purchased a Chromecast device direct from Google, in order to be able to stream content from my Samsung A10 Smartphone to Samsung Smart TV , as the phone does not support screen mirroring. I am unable to set up the Chromecast as instructed using the Google Home app on my phone. Seems straightforward till I get to the point of connecting to my home wifi network, this fails and I receive messages 'connection problems during set up' 'could not communicate with your device' etc .All suggestions from support pages- checks that both are on same wifi network/reboot /restart have been tried and  not helped so far. I can find no way forward . Before I send item back to Google , are you able  suggest a way forward? Thanks

Factory reset the Chromecast , reboot your router, ensure that the 5ghz channel on your router is lower than channel 140 as there are issues connecting above that channel, and try setup again.

Hi Thanks Kudos. Factory Reset Chromecast and rebooted router. No change. According to my Home Hub page, 5Ghz channel is set to 36, but i also see my phone connects itself at 2.4 not 5, as does my wife's Samsung phone. Other devices use 5 Ghz . Is this significant?

Hey there Alanbriggs,

It is recommended that you connect the Chromecast, the device setting up the Chromecast, and devices wanting to cast to the Chromecast, all on the same Wi-Fi band. So, if you set up your Chromecast on the 5GHz band, make sure the device you are casting from is also on the 5GHz band. The same rule applies if you do everything on the 2.4GHz band. In your case, I'd try to connect your phones to the 5GHz band and give it a try, and let us know if everything works correctly.

Best regards,

Yes, thanks Jeran I think I understand what you are suggesting, but my question is how to set phone to 5ghz channel. When I go into bt home hub admin, I can see no option to  select this. I in fact contacted bt to ask  how I might do this, but all the tech guy did was reset the hub. I give up. I have now returned the Chromecast to reduce my stress   , but if you are able to suggest a way forward I guess I might try again. I would like to be able to use my phone to cast to my tv.

Ah, no problem at all. Your router is the one that would have the separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, you would just pick which one to connect to from your phone. If you don't know which one of your Wi-Fi networks is 5GHz, or if you only have a 2.4GHz network available, you may need to talk to your Internet Service Provider, or whoever helped set your network up, to help you get everything set up.

I'm sorry we couldn't have been more helpful, but if you had any other questions or concerns, please let me know!

Best regards,

Jeran
