Why can I no longer connect to my Chromecast from my laptop?

I am mystified. For starters I will say that I am 100% certain that my laptop and my chromecast are connected to the same wifi network - so that is not the issue.  I purchased and installed a chromecast adapter so that I could cast from my laptop to my TV - mostly wanted to use this to cast peloton cycling classes, but other media too.  While my laptop initially indicated that it could see the chromecast TV, I was unable to actually cast to it initially.  A few days later I was able to cast to the TV - I had made no settings changes, but I was now able to cast to the TV.
Now - again without having made any settings changes to my Laptop, the laptop cannot detect the availability of the chromecast at all - it does not even show up as an available device.
I know that the chromecast is discovereable because I CAN connect to it through the Google Home app on my iPad.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Hey there jcrstjohn,

I apologize for the late response, thank you for your patience! Are you still having this casting issue from your laptop? If so, I'd be happy to help you out, let me just ask you some questions:

  • What adapter did you purchase for the laptop?
  • Is the Chromecast with Google TV plugged into your TV's HDMI and powered by a wall outlet?
  • Are you able to cast from Google Chrome?
  • What troubleshooting have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you had any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know! I'm always happy to help out.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hi - yes I am still having this issue.  I purchased the 3rd generation ChromeCast.

The Chromecast is connected to the TV with an HDMI cable - It is plugged into a surge supressor/power strip rather than the wall outlet.

I cannot cast from Google Chrome - i used to be able to, but have not been able to for a month or so now.
I have confirmed that both the Chromecast and the Laptop are on the same WIFI network.  I have confirmed that I can reach the Chromecast from Google Home on my iPad.  I just cannot detect the chromecast from my laptop.

No problem! We can try a few things to get that working again, go ahead and give these steps a try and see if it fixes it:

  • Ensure that Google Chrome is up-to-date, current version is 92.0.4515.162.
  • Disconnect from Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) or proxy servers.
  • Ensure that the firewall and/or antivirus software are up-to-date and aren’t blocking connections to the Chromecast device.
  • If you have a dual-band router, Access Point (AP) isolation must be disabled. Also, if you have a large amount of devices on the network, connect those devices that are unrelated to the Chromecast on a different network band, either 2.4GHz or 5GHz
  • Finally, make sure the Chromecast is within 15 feet of the router.

Go ahead and give those a try! If they still don't work, I have some more thing we can test. Thank you for being patient!

Jeran

Chrome version:  93.0.4577.82

No VPN running
Per Windows Security - Virus Protection is up to date, but the setting to block potentially harmful apps is disabled - would that be a problem?
McAfee Livesafe is out of date - does that need to be renewed?
Fios Router does not have a clear AP Isolation selector that can be disabled.

That Chrome version is good, no worries there!

No VPN is good, no need to worry about that Windows Security setting.

It may be wise to keep McAfee up-to-date, but there are cases (mostly in Windows) wherein the Chromecast device fails to work after the antivirus finished an update. If this happens, you may need to contact McAfee about that.

Do you have a dual-band router? If you do, Access Point (AP) isolation must be disabled. If that still doesn't, try factory resetting that Chromecast and re-set it back up.

I hope this help you out! Let me know if you have any more questions.

Best regards,

Jeran
