Wifi terms and conditions

I am trying to sign in to a WiFi network that requires me to accept terms and conditions. But every time I click the box it takes me back to the start again. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey there Hxrvey,

I am sorry about the late response, thank you for being patient! Were you able to fix that Wi-Fi issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, since I know I'd get annoyed if that were happening to me. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • What is the firmware version of your Chromecast?
  • Does the same issue occur when connecting to different network bands, such as 2.4GHz or 5GHz?
  • Have you already attempted a factory reset on the Chromecast?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi Jeran,

I'm having what I suspect may be related... Using a hotels public wifi, I connected my Chromecast to TV. App icons appear on screen as usual whe using my home's wifi network, but even though Chromecast shows "good" wifi signal, selection of any apps produces error: not connected to internet. We have other devices on same network, and all connect to internet with no issue. I suspect it is with those we had to accept the wifi network's terms and conditions before being able to access internet. No option to do so on TV screen with the Chromecast. Am I missing something, or a workaround?

Hey there KBJ44,

Just to double-check, the hotel's public Wi-Fi is requiring you to sign in? If that is the case, that is considered a Captive portal network, and Chromecast isn't able to operate on those types of networks, unfortunately. Go ahead and check out that article I linked for more information on it.

As for a workaround, you can attempt either a Mobile Hotspot or a travel router. However, Mobile Hotspots aren't technically recommended either, although some folks have some success with them.

I hope that helps,

Jeran

Thanks for confirming what I had already suspected. I'm disapponted that Google CC product dev team hasn't addressed this need (browser app option?). I founf the mobile hotsot workaround works for me. Using my laptop as a hotspot, which is connected to hotel's wifi and internet, then connected CC to the hotspot. It is a bit clumsy though, and definitely not plug-and-play compared to connecting CC on a private network. In my sdearch, I read that MAC address spoofing to register the address of the CC from a laptop is also a possibility, but I'm not sure of the advantage of going that route if it means havng to go through a reconfirmation process regularily as some of gthese networks require.

Thanks again,

KBJ44

Of course! I have used that exact same laptop set-up in the past as well, and I agree it isn't the most intuitive set-up compared to using a normal Wi-Fi network. I think the issue with the captive portal networks is that the router does not allow the Chromecast itself into the network, since the network expects the Chromecast to be able to sign in, which of course it doesn't know how to do that! As for that MAC address spoofing, I can't say I've ever tried it, nor have I seen anyone here talk about it.

In the meantime, did you have any other questions or concerns today?

Best regards,

Jeran
