how to control Chromecast with google tv sound with my android smartphone not the remote

Ive been trying to control the volume with my smartphone and not the remote. It will only change with the remote and gives a message that "surround sound" is on. I simply want to use it like a standard chromecast device. Is this possible? My other chromecast only devices work fine this way

That gets tricky.  It's possible, but only in certain situations.

You won't be able to do it if you're playing directly from your Chromecast with Google TV.  In that case, your TV is probably expecting an IR blast to tell it to change volume; not the HDMI instruction that your Chromecast device uses.  That's why most people don't see a volume option on the Android remote.

But, Chromecast with Google TV devices also accept casting like other Chromecast devices.  if you are CASTING from the app on your phone (instead of using the menu on your TV), you can use your phone's volume buttons to control the volume that the Chromecast device is pushing to your TV.

Just be careful and not forget.  If you turn your Chromecast output down and forget you'll wonder why your TV is so quiet even at high-volume levels.
