no surround sound

I have enabled surround sounds in the Settings by setting it to Auto.

My AVR shows stereo input.  Nerd stats show mp4a codec.

I thought YTTV was 5.1 enabled?

As I understand it, Dolby Digital surround for YouTube TV on Google Chromecast with Google TV will be enabled, probably by the end of November.

On other hardware platforms this feature is already available.

At the end of July 2021 Google announced that is planning to add 5.1 Dolby surround sound for all members free of charge, but it won’t be coming to the Chromecast with Google TV until “later this year.”

Is Chromecast with Google TV connected to the TV or to the AVR?

If Chromecast with Google TV is connected to the TV ensure that audio signal is router to the sound system and not to the TV speakers and the digital audio output is set to Dolby Digital.

In Chromecast with Google TV advanced sound settings, select Manual and enable Dolby Digital.

Reinitialise Chromecast by unplug it from the mains power grid for about 5 minutes then plug it back in.

Chromecast w/GoogleTV is connected to AVR.
I rebooted the chromecast and still everything is in stereo.  I ran surround sound test from youtube and i came through as stereo as well.

You connect it directly to the AVR because the TV don't have support for Dolby Digital Plus?

Feed it a proper surround audio file from internal memory (Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus).

Check surround sound functionality on Netflix also. Keep in mind that your AVR needs to support Dolby Digital Plus decoding for Netflix.

Again this issue is being ignored, no updates fixed this, no info about a possible fix in future updates, multiple threads on this and previous forums. F.ex. this one: https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Chromecast/Why-Hasn-t-Chromecast-Arranged-for-5-1-Sound-for-N...  .. More than a year now and they do not give a f. about the product and it's updates. Shame.

There must be something wrong with your setup (maybe a HDMI handshake problem).

Just yesterday, a user on this forum posted a thread about having issues with Dolby Atmos in Disney Plus, but Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are working fine, bot in Disney Plus and Netflix, the later offering Dolby Atmos also.

The use connected Chromecast with Google TV to the AV receiver.

Thus is the thread:

This is a separate issue.  I am not inquiring about Netflix or Disney.

I am interested specifically with enabling Dolby 5.1 with YoutubeTV & Chromecast w/Google TV.
It appears to me that this is an inferior combination and a very poor replacement for Google TV service which is ending on Nov 30.

It would be more helpful if Google could be more specific than "later this year".   Paying $65/month for YTTV and no 5.1 is terrible service.

Yeah, the best option is just to close the thread and forget about it.. Every escalation, every feedback is ending like that.. For a veeery long time google did nothing to fix and just swiping things under the rug. Serious shame.

Now, let's get real...

You paid for the service anyway until now, although you knew very well that it doesn't offer surround sound yet.

So, the fact that they intend to offer it is a very good thing.

Good things come to those who wait!

Up until a week ago I had real Google TV through Fiber.  Google is discontinuing this service on Nov 30th and replacing it with Chromecast w/Google TV.  I am doing a YTTV trial and severely disappointed in the downgraded solution.   so going forward paying $65/mo is bad service + bad alternative to existing google tv customers.

So, to your point I have not been paying for it.  I am a new customer wondering what was wrong with my setup.  Who would've thought that in year 2021 stereo sound with HD video is acceptable??  not me.

To each his own!

I am accustomed to stereo sound and enjoy it every day of my life. Wile I experience the surround sound in cinema theaters, I never felt the need to put together a surround sound system in my home because, my main passion is music. Nevertheless, the audio system I use (two 15 main speakers, two 15 inch backup speaker, two 18 inch main subwoofers, two 18 inch backup subwoofers) is more than capable to rattle the guts in my body when I watch movies. And yes...its stereo!

I really hope for YouTube TV to speed up surround sound implementation.

Sure! I want to know, when customer service will be something that google takes seriously? And when our device will be updated and fixed? As from (sic!) over a year now!

Hey there jaromyer,

Rest assured that Google is very aware of the 5.1 surround sound issues, and the engineering team is actively working on them. I checked up with the engineering team about this issue, but I'm sorry to say that there isn't any update yet. I promise that posting threads and submitting feedback on this issue does help stress the gravity of the issue to Google, because every thread I see on the issue gets sent up to the engineering team, and feedback is always sent directly them when it comes to engineering problems.

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful, I really wish I could provide some more updates on this ongoing issue.

Best regards.

Jeran
