not compatible with Sony HT-X8500 soundbar

Hi,

I've tried to get Chromecast with Google TV plugged into HDMI IN port on Sony HT-X8500 soundbar, and get soundbar connected to TV via another HDMI cable.

The situation is , everytime I turned on the Chromecast, TV screen will blink several minutes and then TV resolution dropped to 1080p instead of 4K 60Hz.

Some forum says it might be a compatible problem between Chromecast with Sony soundbar, so I've tired to ask Sony. Sony replied to me it's not their problem if other device worked fine with the same setting and then asked me to seek support from google.

ps.  chromecast with google tv is updated to the newest version.

It may be solved by a software upgrade.

It's good to hear that connecting Chromecast directly to the TV works as it should.

Furthermore, I would advice you to no pay too much attention to the Dolby Atmos, unless you have cealing mounted speakers.

What matters in your case is if the TV supports Dolby Digital Plus decoding or passtrough.

Sony HT-X8500 has support for UHD video resolution up to 60 Hz.

Ensure that the HDMI cable between the soundbar and the TV is HDMI 2.0 certified and its length is no more than 3 meters.

Also check Chromecast display settings and make the necessary adjustments.

On your TV, ensure the HDMI cable is connected to a HDMI input with HDCP 2.2 support and/or ARC/eARC functionality. Verify the TV HDMI input settings to allow full UHD colospace.

Thanks for your suggestion, I've double confirmed everything that you mentioned
 
1. The cable I'm using is 2 Meters long 4K60P 18Gbps came from soundbar bundled.
2.display setting on Chromecast is 4K 60Hz.
3.soundbar is linked to HDMI port supporting ARC, however I could't find info about HDCP2.2 support from my TV specs. Furthermore, I tried to plugged Chromecast directly to same HDMI port on TV, it worked fine and no blink at all.

Hey there ivanhuang,

 

Sorry for the delayed response on this, but this is most likely a compatibility issue as you have already talked with the soundbar manufacturer regarding this. Most likely an HDCP 2.2 issue if it is technically supported. Since the Chromecast with Google TV "tests" the device via HDCP 2.2 to check if it is connected to a device that is 4K compatible.

 

For now, maybe you can have try to change the HDMI port where the soundbar is connected to the TV for further testing and let us know if that helps at all.

Thank you for not giving up the issue I've posted, yet .

I'll try the suggestion you mentioned, however if it works then, also means I'll have to give up ARC function.

btw, I've checked the spec of Sony HT-X8500, it does support HDCP 2.2 you mentioned.

By the way, can you provide any information about your TV model?

You can troubleshoot the setup further, like this:

- use your own or borrow an Ultra HD Blu-ray player or another media player with Ultra HD resolution, connect it to the soundbar and observe if the image is displayed correctly to the TV

- insert an ultra HD HDMI switch between Chromecast device and soundbar and observe behaviour

TV model is Mi TV 4X

it's SPEC page says the display of this model support 4K HDR (Resolution:3840 x 2160/Refresh Rate:60Hz).   and I'll try to borrow a Blu-ray device to do the testing, thank you !

When you connect the Chromecast with Google TV directly to the TV HDMI input, how it performs? It does the same thing?

I asked you about the TV model, because some Mi TV models are experiencing some issues of their own and you might want to check with them too about your problem.

Why do you want to connect the Chromecast device directly to the soundbar?

the reason to connect the Chromecast directly to the soundbar is .... to light up the ATOMS lol.
it's also the reason why I bought Chromecast instead of using android OS on Mi TV.

btw, I'll try again to connect Chromecast to HDMI on TV this weekend, I remember it was totally fine when I did this last time.

sorry for late reply. I've tried to directly connect the Google TV to TV HDMI, it was working perfectly.
Just like Simon says below, it might be the HDCP issue.

Do you think this could be solved by software upgrade in the future ?

I have the same problem when Chromecast connected directly to my LG sound bar. It seems that it is caused by the HDCP 2.2 handshaking issue
