old chromecasts don't work with new routers?

the chromecasts i have are for the most part 3rd gen however as of writing, i don't know if maybe one of them is 2nd gen.. but probably not. none of them have google TV built in.

once i tried to upgrade to a mesh wifi router system and the chromecasts and google home speakers just hated it so much. always disconnecting etc. I think that if the chromecast is connected to one of the mesh wifi points while the phone is connected to a different mesh wifi point.. even though all the routers are supposed to be like one big router and it doesn't matter to the devices where they are connected, the chromecasts just don't work with it.

Currently i have two routers with one acting as an access point for upstairs. they have different wifi network names: downstairs-wifi and upstairs-wifi.. i have the iphones set to connect to whatever network is in best signal range.. and sometimes the iphone stays connected to upstairs wifi while the chromecast is connected to the downstairs-wifi. I can't see the chromecast on my iphone in this case.. but when i go to switch wifi networks manually on the iphone, the chromecast remains undetectable. i can close an reopen the app and that doesn't help. I generally don't try to restart the iphone to fix this, though maybe that would help temporarily, but if restarting the iphone is the only way to fix this.. then i will toss the chromecasts and google homes in the trash and go to amazon...

are there some router settings that I need to play with to have a good experience with chromecasts? iphone settings?

sometimes one of my chromecasts just doesn't get detected by anything other than the google home speaker. meaning i can cast to the chromecast by saying "ok google play survivor season 42 episode 1" and it will go to paramount+ and cast.. this has generally ALWAYS worked.. though i've been careful to make sure that the chromecast and speaker are both connected to the same wifi network..

I've generally quit using the chromecasts in favor of the apple tv or amazon kindle fire sticks.. because the chromecasts are generally just pretty problematic 😞

Hi isaac_nestuser,

Thanks for reaching out and for sharing detailed information on what's happening to your device. Let's sort this out.

Quick question: have you tried to check if the same issue persists when using a different mobile device? If the Wi-Fi Assist setting is turned on in your iPhone, please turn it off and restart your Wi-Fi points.

Regards,

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,

Interesting no I haven't investigated wi-fi assist setting. I am on verizon wireless with iphone 13 pro max.
I investigated my settings in depth and scoured the internet for information on disabling Wi-Fi Assist. none of the guides seemed to apply to my specific phone. I was unable to discover if my phone and services is compatible with wi-fi assist or why i was unable to disable it..

I would definitely like to try that still though...

Hello there,

Thanks for getting back to us. You could try this: Go to Settings > Cellular or Settings > Mobile Data. Then scroll down and tap the slider for Wi-Fi Assist. You can also try the other suggested steps above and let me know how it goes.

Best,

Jennifer

Jennifer, i do now see the wifi assist. I didn't realize there were more options below the long list of apps...

We'll see if this helps.

Anyways. At this moment i seem to have all devices connected to my Google home app. And currently Netflix and other apps are actually recognizing the chrome casts..

So that is good.

I want to know more about how the network works with the Google smart home devices..

Let me describe my network a little

I have fiber modem in the basement connected to a gateway router with wifi. This router provides one ssid with dual 2.4ghz 5 ghz radios and the router automatically decides which radio each device should connect to behind the scenes. I don't have any ability to control the radio connection choice that i know of..

To one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the basement router i have attached an Ethernet cable that runs to upstairs where i have a second wifi router from a different company connected which is setup in access point mode. This access point is broadcasting two separate ssid: wifi-upstairs24ghz and wifi-upstairs5ghz.

Is this setup, with three different ssid's going to be fine to with with a Google smart home? It doesn't matter which ssid a device is attached to right? All of them are still on the same network in theory? I haven't done anything tricky with the gateway router like try to setup separate subnets..

I've noticed that with the Google home mini speakers seem to want to be on 2.4ghz, while nest hub v2 only wants the 5ghz.. And chromrcasts I'm not sure about.. maybe 5ghZ is best for them

When i say a device seems to want only one radio or the other it is either because the iPhone wasn't working to set it up if i tried the other device. Or on the other hand, some devices just don't seem to detect the 5ghz radio or 2.4ghz radio...

Hey there,

Great, let me know if that fixed the issue. With regards to the Google Home devices, it has the same rule with Chromecast when connecting to the network. Your devices should be connected to the same network or SSID to work as intended. Also, Google Home speakers and display and Chromecast (2nd Gen and 3rd Gen) works with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz network.

Thanks,

Jennifer
