"Use a Google TV remote to set this up"

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Chromecast/Google-TV-remote-not-recognizing-when-setting-up-s...

Here I am with the remote, and every time I try to setup the Volume, Power, and Input buttons to my TV, I get told "Use a Google TV remote to set this up"

Now, what should be happening is I should be getting a message asking me if the setting worked or not, not telling me the remote I'm trying to use isn't a Google TV remote when it's a Google TV remote.  I'm referencing another thread here because I can guess that frustration is what caused there to be no reply.  When we're using the Google devices and we get a message we're NOT expecting based on all instructions provided, there is a problem.

Blaming it on third party items is not the solution.  The software on the Chromecast should be smart enough to know we TRIED using the Remote that was included with our Chromecast, and not sit there telling us that we are not using the right remote to setup the remote.  I couldn't navigate to the place to do the setup of those 3 functions (power, volume, input selection) if I hadn't been using the google remote {though I guess I could use the phone app, but seriously the Chromecast should know what device is inputting data to it, just for security reasons if nothing else}.

Let's have some productive answers that do not blame the secondary hardware for the primary hardware failing.  Is there some reason that the Chromecast would believe that we're not attempting to use Remote we're attempting to configure?  What could cause the Chromecast to believe this? How can we remedy this?

Hey there ErdeDrache,

I apologize for the late response, thank you for being patient! It sounds like this remote issue has been giving you quite the headache. Let's see if we can figure this out. Go ahead and follow these steps first:

  1. Check for pending remote software updates. Go to Settings Remotes and Accessories Remote update Continue. The remote might briefly disconnect during the software update.
  2. Forget the Chromecast Voice Remote. Go to  Settings Remotes and Accessories Chromecast Remote Forget.
  3. Pair the remote. Go to  Settings Remotes and Accessories Pair remote or accessory, then follow the instructions on the TV.
Note: If applicable, you can also press the button on the Chromecast device for one second to start to pair.
  4. Remove, then replace the batteries in the Chromecast Voice Remote.
  5. If the steps above don't work, perform a factory reset on the remote.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

I am having this same issue. My remote was working fine then stopped. I’ve reset my chromecast and remote and forget and re-paired and still not working. I had no trouble setting up initially and now I keep getting the same “use google voice remote to set this up” and it is while using the voice remote

So, fun fact - pushing the netflix button on the remote is enough to turn on the TV, this surprised me, because telling the remote to use any of the HDMI controls was a fail.  I think the end solution is just that "Power, Volume, and Input" on a google remote are garbage.  I will relegate my one chromecast unit to the least used room, and continue to use a competitors slightly sexier product... perhaps theirs is better because T and V are part of their name?

My steps ended at 3, which was fantastic.  i'm confused why unpairing and repairing were required, but i can accept that they were - acceptance of that fact doesn't dilute the curiosity about the matter though.  I attempted to achieve Step 1, but was promptly informed that my remote was up to date, which had me frantically searching google for "chromecast remote firmware release versions" in hopes that I could have external to the Chromecast ecosystem verification.

@Wreckenridge Please let us know if you also achieve glorious success with these steps and hopefully at some point we will know the whys...

My current guess - the remote doesn't desire to learn a new TV after X days - perhaps the act of disconnecting from the Chromecast and reconnecting lets the remote believe it's allowed to learn again?

Hey there ErdeDrache,

Awesome, I'm glad you were able to get it to work! I'm guessing there must have been some cached data on the Chromecast that was deleted when you disconnected the remote that may have been affecting the remote's ability to communicate with the TV. I'm not 100% sure, but that's my theory. Regardless, I'm happy to hear it worked.

Jeran
