sporadically unable to cast to chromecast 2 from android phone

sh136

Last week a casting issue showed up on 1 of my devices: AndroidOne (A10) phone, screencasting (from android quicksettings) was unable to connect to chromecast, which is working perfectly fine (I was able to cast to it from another AndroidOne device, and the chromecast interface was visible on TV its connected to)

This happened once, then the next day casting worked OK. Today issue came back again.

Notable is, that the cast icon on the nonfunctioning phone was filled red. What does it mean??

I did nothing to chromecast, nor to the phone. I get it its probably issue on that phone, but I need to pinpoint it. There is no rogue app that I could find, so some ideas or knowhow is highly welcomed.

Thank you very much!

Hey there sh136,

I apologize about the late response on this thread, thank you for your patience! Were you able to fix that casting issue? If not, I'd be happy to help out, since I know these connection issues can be tricky to figure out. Let me just ask you some questions about what's happening:

  • What color is the LED light on the Chromecast device when this happens?
  • Does this issue occur when casting from any other device?
  • Is your Google Home app up-to-date?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you already tried?

In the meantime, I would recommend that you check out this article on troubleshooting your Chromecast connection, and let me know if the issue persists.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hi, no need to apologize.

Chromcast led is white - as I wrote, in the same time when it doesnt work on one device, I am able to connect with another device. Chromecast is visible on the "nonworking" phone, its just unable to connect to chromecast (phone is showing "connecting" and "spinning circle", and cast icon is red filled. And nothing happens - this could go on forever. Sometimes phone restart helps, sometimes no and I just need to wait till next day when it magically works again.

Its happening only with one phone. Home app is uptodate.

I am aware this is most likely a phone issue, however maybe some of the specialists here can give me a hint to what could cause this regarding to chromecast device.

Hey there sh136,

That is an odd issue! I'd be happy to help figure out where the issue is on that Android device, and see if we can resolve it. Let me just ask a few more questions to narrow it down a bit more:

  • What's the Operating System version of the AndroidOne? You should have an Android device that runs 6.0 or higher.
  • Do you have power saving mode enabled?  If it's enabled, disable it.
  • Do you have screen overlay enabled? If so, disable it, here are the steps on how to do that:
  1. Go to phone Settings.
  2. Tap on Apps Apps Manager Applications.
  3. On the top right corner, tap the gear icon or the three vertical dots.
  4. Look for Draw over other apps or Apps that can appear on top.
  5. In some Android devices, they will need to tap on Special Access first, before they can get to Draw over other apps.
  6. After a list of apps appears, tap on Google Play Services.
  7. Switch the slider to the left to disable Off.
  8. Reboot the device. Then, try to cast the screen.

I look forward to your response on this, if you had any other questions, please let me know.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hello. Thank you for patience. I tried it, or better say, I wanted to try, but today casting works flawlessly, I even tried to reproduce steps from when it failed (open chrome app, turn TV on, etc), but it keeps working now 😄

Regarding those steps, I doubt it would show anything, as even before, restart of the phone solved the issue for the day.

So, sorry for wasting your time, thanks so far. I will monitor it and perhaps write again if it happens.

Hello. Strange as it is, today it also works OK. I dont recall any app update, but perhaps there was an update that solved it.

Again, thanks for involvement.
