usb hub - Cant see storage

wowartic
Community Member

Hello,

Storage on my Chromecast was getting full constantly, so I bought a USB hub to add an SD card/USB flash drive.

I bought https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003321002994.html?spm=a2g0o.order_list.0.0.ff111802IGR8SZ

My chrome cast turns on fine but when I connect the sd card or flash drive to the hub Chromecast does not see anything.

My theory is that Chromecast does not support the USB 3.1 protocol but I cannot find information about it.

Do you have any idea how could I make it work?

Hiya wowartic,

In this scenario, I would recommend giving it a try again when you get back from vacation, and if it doesn't work, reach out to Chromecast Support. They would have some tools that would be able to narrow down the issue and see if the device is compatible or not.

In the meantime, I'll leave the thread open for a little while in case you have any more questions. If we do end up closing the thread before you're home, and you still need assistance, please feel free to open a new thread.

Best regards,

Jeran

Hey there wowartic,

I'd be happy to help you out, since I know expanding storage can sometimes get tricky. The first thing I would check is step 3 on this article:

"To expand your Chromecast’s storage, you’ll need a:

  • Compatible USB-C hub with a power delivery port.
  • USB-C charger (higher than 1.5A / 7.5w).
  • Portable storage device, such as a USB stick or SD card.
    • If you use a USB storage device, use USB 2.0 or greater speeds.

To expand your storage:

  1. Connect your Chromecast to your TV’s HDMI port.
  2. Connect the USB-C hub to your Chromecast.
  3. Connect the USB-C charger to a power outlet and to the power delivery port of the USB-C hub.
  4. Connect your USB storage device to the hub. You’ll be prompted to reformat the storage device in order to expand your system storage. "

Did you have any trouble doing those steps, or did you follow the steps, and it's still not detecting the storage?

I look forward to your response!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hello Jeran,

Thank you for your reply.

I did those steps my Chromecast is turning on and working without problems.

But when I insert an sd card or USB storage I am not getting the prompt to reformat it. I cant see it at all.

I think problem is that the USB hub supports USB 3.1 protocol but I am not sure.

How can I find out if my USB-C hub is compatible with chromecast?

wowartic

Hey there wowartic,

I would encourage you to check out this thread on a similar issue, specifically the solution provided by djtetei, and see if that allows you to format the SD card. It involved activating the Google TV developer tools and enabling the option to manually format that drive.

Let me know if that works out for you, I look forward to your response!

Best regards,

Jeran

Hello wowartic,

It's us again. How's it going? Did you manage to get your device working?

Thanks for the help, Jeran.

Jennifer

Hello,

Thank you for checking up on me.

I am on vacation so I cant try to resolve the issue right now.

But I did try the solution that Jeran was posting before I left.

I had developer options enabled already. I did enable Force to allow apps on the external option there.
But when I check storage devices I don't see anything connected. Does not matter if I use a USB drive or an sd card.

I think the USB hub is sadly not compatible with the device.

I tried using the ethernet connection in the hub and Chromecast just does not see it. When I tried all of this with my phone the USB hub works no problem.

So from what I can see the hub powers Chromecast how it should but the devices don't exchange data at all.

If there is something I could do to resolve the issue I will gladly try when I get back home.

Thank you for your help.
