It's also possible that there was an update pushed and a reboot was needed to refresh or change options that had been updated. It's also possible if you have a smart TV that there was an update.
Generally, a reboot should be one of the first steps before raising a red flag that something is broken or suggesting there's a bug. Not sure where you are but my resolutions options include 1080p 60/50/24Hz, so it doesn't appear to be a bug or a save issue.

@thebenzinator while we're not experts on TV models, the guess would be that's the default refresh rate for the TV and that's the signal that's transmitted to the CCwGTV once powered so it gets reset, despite your personal preference or manual setting.

More details on this issue: I just saw that on settings of the Google tv I don't have 50hz. Reboot to the Google tv solved it - it was set back to 50hz! Meaning it's not save issue but some bug on Google tv

btw, when the issue happen (where it is set to 1080-60hz) - if i go to google tv settings - i even do NOT see an option of 50hz there like this is really bogus situation and there i decided that a restart to the google tv cannot be a bad thing...

there is no update - i am using the most up to date google tv version and my tv can't get an update.
I am convinced it is a bug in the chromecast google tv display settings since i had never had this issue with the 2nd/3rd generations of chromecast that i actually used on the same tv. The bug is even reproducible easily - it seems the display setting in google tv get messed up once you turn of the tv and then turn it on. The reboot is only workaround to "fix" the issue obviously.

next time when i will post screen shots that you see how those settings get messed up

Hey there thebenzinator,
That is a pretty strange issue. If it isn't too much trouble for you, would you be able to re-create the issue, then submit feedback via the Google Home app with logs enabled? That way, our engineering team can look into it by looking at your particular devices.
Thank you for your help on this,
Jeran

The issue just reproduced. See screenshot attached how do I see the incorrect chromecast google tv refresh rate (60 hz) and even stranger is that you don't have any 50hz option there. Once I do restart of the chromecast google tv (from settings) it boots ok with correct 50hz setting (the the other screenshot )

Awesome, thank you for doing that! The engineering team will take some time to look into that issue. Just to be transparent, it may take some time for them to find a resolution for this if the issue does lie on the Chromecast's end.
In the meantime, did you have any other questions or concerns for us?
Best regards,
Jeran
