Google next mini sleep sound automations not working

Google nest mini sleep sounds automations do not work anymore. I’ve had the same automation for years but stopped working last week. If I command ‘hey Google’ it will play but will not run by automated routine. If I click run routine it does not play. I’ve added new sleep sound routines and they don’t work as well. I’ve rebooted the device too. Nothing works.

• Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app? If not, you can check this Google Help Center article to learn more: How to update the Google Home app.
• Are you using an Android or iPhone device?
• Is your smartphone’s operating system updated?
• Is this a Personal or Household Routine? (To identify the type of routine you created, please follow these instructions: Open the Google Home app, tap Automations, then check which section the Routine is listed under.)
•  Is the Activate Routine toggle enabled? (To check this information, please open your Google Home app, go to the Routine editor and verify that the 'Activate Routine' toggle is in the On position.)
• What starters do you have configured to activate the Routine? Which specific starter do you think should have activated it when the issue occurred? (You can check this in the Routine editor view, where you can review the list of starters and conditions.)
• Can you find an entry in the Activity tab for the Routine running? (To find this information, please open the Google Home app, tap Activity, and look for Routine started events. The entry should include the time the Routine ran, the name of the Routine, and what caused the Routine to start.)

It’s the same personal routine working for years and it stopped now. I’m on IOS 26.1 with latest Google home app. 
The routine does not play when I click the run /play button. If I speak to it, it runs. 
I’ve added an additional dummy action to run the routine when my Google nest is unmuted, which I never do, but somehow this is making the routine work. 
it is quite annoying that Google periodically messes up existing functions. Last year Night Mode stopped working for months and now regular sleeping sound routines are not working. 
other types of routines such light on/off are still working.
