Home automation - some colors can't be set

Hi all,

I am using a Google Nest Hub and have connected my Google Home via Matter to my smart home system.

Since a few days (this may be related to the new automation editor), I have been running into some weird issues with my automations.

Since the new automation editor cannot set colors for lamps, I am using the old editor to create automations.

One part of my automation was to set the color of some lights to orange-red. For a few days, this hasn't been working, and if I run my automation via a voice command, my Nest Hub or Google Assistant on my smartphone responds that this feature isn't supported.

With some other colors (i.e. pumpkin), the automation runs without a problem.

The two weird things are:

If I manually run the automation via the Google Home app, all colors (orange-red included) are set and no error occurs. If I run the same automation manually via the Nest Hub, the automation runs into the mentioned error.

I can set all colors manually in the Google Home app without any problem.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Kind regards

Jan

Hello @janobert,

Thank you for posting on the Community. I understand the issue you're having with your automations not running well on your Nest Hub and not allowing you to set some colors. Thanks for the steps to change the colors and try if the automation works with voice commands or manually. Your testing has already provided us with a lot of good information to start with.

To help us get to the bottom of this, could you please provide a few more details by answering the questions below?

  • If you command your Nest Hub without using an automation (for example, by saying, "Hey Google, set the lights to orange-red"), does it successfully change the color? This will help us know if the issue is with the automation itself or the command on the display.
  • Have you already tried unlinking and relinking your lights in the Google Home app? If so, does the same issue with "orange-red" still occur afterward?
  • What is the make and model of your smart lights?
  • How did you configure the automation in the old editor? If possible, could you provide a screenshot of the routine that doesn't work, as well as a screenshot of a routine that does work (like the "pumpkin" one)?

The answers to these questions will provide us with crucial information to determine if the problem is with the device, the app, or the specific command.

Thank you for your help, and I look forward to your response.

Regards,

Kevin

Hi @kcruzgonzalez ,

thanks for your response.

I tested a bit more and found out that several colors are affected. I’ve got another routine in which the lights should be set to “candlelight”. Here is the same issue.

I tested the voice commands in English (I usually speak with the assistant in German), here I encountered some another strange things:

  • I can’t change the colors if I use English voice commands (no red, blue, orange red or even pumpkin - no color is working). The Nest Hub responds that the device is not reachable.
  • I can only change the color if I use German voice commands, including colors which don’t work in routines (i.e. candlelight)

Examples:

  • “Set the lights to pumpkin” doesn’t work, while the exact German translation “Stelle die Lichter auf pumpkin” works without a problem.
  • “Set the lights to candlelight” doesn’t work, while the exact German translation “Stelle die Lichter auf Kerzenlicht” does work
  • For some reason, orange-red doesn’t work in any language as voice command.

I can change the colors including colors which don’t work in routines if I use Google Assistant on my smartphone

I still can set any color with the color picker in the Google home app or on the display itself, and (as already mentioned) I can run all routines without an error manually in the Google home app but not on the Nest Hub.

To answer your question in short: It seems I can change the colors with voice commands, as long as they are in German.

Since I am using a Matter gateway, I cannot just remove one device. I had to remove the whole Matter network which causes a loss of my devices (30+). Unfortunately, this did not solve the issue either.

The lamps I am using are Awox/Telekom DECT Lamps (E27) over a matter gateway (AVM Smart Gateway)

I attached four screenshots of the routines. They look the same, but in one the lamp color should change to “pumpkin” and in the other it should change to "orange red". The only difference is actually the color.

In the routine, all the lights should be turned on, set to a specific brightness and to a color.

Thank you for your help. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask :).

Kind Regards

Jan

I just went to set up a new automation with the new app format and I'm not able to set colours either. Additionally, you used to be able to select on, brightness and colour in the one automation action, but now each change is it's own action which means manually selecting the same device numerous times. I don't know why they would change it if it wasn't going to support the same features/functions. It's a big step back if you ask me.
