How to get kids voices recognised by Google Home

Chrisc

Hey folks,

Google has been driving me mad this morning so hopefully someone can help before I throw everything out of the window.

We have numerous Google mini speakers and a Home Hub around the house. It's linked to my Google account and recognises mine and my wife's voices.

Recently, when the kids ask it a question or to play music etc it says it won't until they verify their voices. My son has a Google account which is managed via Family Link but this crashes every time I try and add him to the devices. My daughter shares his account on her tablet.

If I turn off the personalisation then it will answer but then say we need personalisation to be on for results.

I'm not bothered about personalised results, I just want me, my wife and my kids to be able to speak to the assistant around the house. Why is it so difficult?

Hi Chrisc,

Thanks for posting in the community.

It is completely understandable that you're feeling bothered when your Google Nest devices aren't working as expected, especially when it impacts your kids' ability to use them! I apologize for the trouble you've been experiencing with voice verification and personalization. Thank you for the troubleshooting efforts you have tried to resolve the inconvenience and share this information with me. Don’t worry, help is here.

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • Is your Google Home app updated?
  • Is your mobile device updated?
  • Is your Family Link app updated?
  • Can you double-check if you are signed in to the Google Home app with the same Google account as your Google Nest devices are linked to?

In the meantime, I recommend you train the Google Assistant with your child’s voice again. Please follow these instructions:

  1. On your phone or tablet, open the Family Link app .
  2. Select your child.
  3. Tap Controls, then select “Google Assistant.” Teach Assistant [child's name]'s voice again.
  4. Tap “Retrain.”
  5. Hand your phone or tablet to your child.
  6. Help them teach Google Assistant to recognize their voice. Your child needs to read a few phrases out loud. If your child needs help with reading, you can whisper the phrases into their ear, but try to whisper away from the mic so that Google Assistant learns your child’s voice instead of yours. For more information, you can check this helpful Google Help Center article: Let your child use Google Assistant on your devices.

Best regards,

Virna
