Lights on 2.4 channel never connected with Google Home? How to fix?

Hi All

I have a led strip light that must run on 2.4 wifi channel.

I setup seperate ssid channels to identify, connect and do initial setup. Lights connected to phone and their smart app. Connected to google home and worked well.

Having seperate wifi channels was crap though, so went back to auto channel and one ssid name.

Now the lights are always offline via Google home and automation. However i can always turn them on via wifi connection via phone through their app.

Any ideas how I can ensure Google home runs on 2.4 channel so that hopefully these lights stay connected in home?

Thanks in advance!

Short answer is this varies wildly by device manufacturer. You may want to factory reset them and try setup when your phone is connected to the 2.4 GHz band. Some phone models have Wifi settings that allow you to connect your phone specifically to the 2.4 GHz band.

The Google Home app needs to support devices that use both 2.4 and 5 GHz bands, and has no features or settings to set which band to communicate on with devices. I would assume that the vendor's app still works as it either doesn't use 5 GHz at all or it knows that device type doesn't support 5 GHz so doesn't try to communicate with it over 5 GHz.

Thanks David. Interestingly the lights work no probs via their app (smart life) and my phone. So assume it's forcing the app and phone to use 2.4ghz.

The issue is always with Google home app.

So obviously Google home is always trying to access this in the 5ghz channel and won't switch.

You are correct though that the vendors app and lights specifically say it will only work over 2.4. That's why I had to change my wifi to choose the channel and setup initially.

I just can't work out how their app allows my phone to move bands to connect but Google home won't.

Hey folks,

davidking Thanks for the shared information.

TheGiant The information shared is correct. Google Home app will automatically connect to the stronger signal specially if you have a router that both 2.4 and 5 GHz network is supported. The workaround for this situation is to provide a specific name and password for each band. If you're using a phone with smart network switch feature, you can also turned it off so that your phone will stick to one band.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Alex, I feared that was the only option. I did that to initially setup, but just caused too much grief with all my other devices and then issues with them not being on the same channel.

I guess I will have to buy a smart plug and work around the issue that way. At least it will turn on and off but won't have access to colour and brightness settings.

Cheers

Thanks Alex, not really a solution but sounds like not many options.
