Nest comes on when it shouldn't

Nest settings

  1. Eco set to default (50F)
  2. Schedule set to turn off and goto Eco at 10pm
  3. Model Display 3.6. Battery hardwired (at 3.94v). Home Away enabled.

Situation:

  1. We turned on the furnace remotely at 9:45pm and arrived home at 10:15pm.
  2. At 10:20, we lowered temp to 55F.
  3. The furnace turned itself on at about 1:30pm. We lowered it to 55F
  4. Nest resumed the scheduling correctly in the morning.

Questions:

  1. It appears that turning on the furnace after the scheduled "off" time causes the problem. What should we be doing in the above situation?
  2. When we leave the house, presence sensing should automatically set Nest to Eco. However, on vacation, Nest came on twice (outside temp in 60s, so Safety Temp not triggered).

Hello steve711,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your inquiry. It appears like you've encountered a perplexing situation with your Nest Thermostat. From your detailed description, it seems that the thermostat is not behaving as expected, especially when the furnace is manually turned on after the scheduled "off" time. Let's sort this out.

In response to your first question, it's possible that manually activating the furnace after the scheduled "off" time could disrupt the thermostat's programming. One potential solution to avoid this issue could be to adjust the schedule settings to accommodate any late-night adjustments. For instance, you could extend the scheduled "off" time slightly later than your usual bedtime to allow for flexibility in case the furnace needs to be turned on manually.

For your second question about the Nest Thermostat coming on twice during vacation, despite the home being in Eco mode, it could be due to several factors.

  • Ensure that the Home/Away Assist feature is properly configured and functioning.
  • Double-check the settings to make sure it's accurately detecting when you're away from home.
  • Verify that there are no conflicting settings or overrides that may be causing the thermostat to activate unexpectedly.
  • It might also be beneficial to review the thermostat's history or logs to see if any specific triggers or events coincide with the unexpected activations.

Let us know if you have more questions.

Best regards,
Mark
