New Google Home v4.3.x - A mix of old and new routines

When I was on the old app version 4.2 I had some routines (Bedtime, At Work etc.), including HOME and AWAY routines: all routines had the old routine editor.

After upgrading to new v4.3 I was supposed to get the new routine editor:

  • Fully customize your “Home” and “Away” automations: We have upgraded the “Home” and “Away” automations to the new automation editor, allowing you to fully customize them with conditions, new actions, and any other starters. These automations will continue to work as normal without any action on your behalf.

Well, after upgrading to version 4.3 I now have the old routines BUT still with the old editor. If instead I create new routine I get the new editor.

This is strange because according to the above Google statement I was supposed to get for the HOME and AWAY automations to the new automation editor. Instead the pre-existing ones remains with old editor (and I cannot even delete them) while the new ones have the new editor.

Did you sign up for Early Access (Profile picture in Google Home app)? You'll then have to wait for Google to roll it out to you.

But be aware that not everything that was available in the old one is available yet in the new one.

I can still use the old ways though.

I did but the situation is mixed now: I have the new interface, the new automation editor, the old routines with old routine editor, Ask Gemini is not working (yet) and on topo of this the presence sensing is going hvaoc > https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Home-Automation/Away-automation-kicks-off-even-if-I-am-at-hom...

I have never used presence sensing because of its unpredictability, but as this Google Home is still in Early Access (beta testing) you have to expect things to not work correctly.

Do you have the option to use your Wi-Fi as a trigger for your Presence instead of Geofencing? Sounds like when you loose or about to loose your Wi-Fi on your phone it would change to "Away".

This seems like it would be a more reliable option.

  • In the 4.3 update the Ask Home was enabled for me. But as I don't have the Premium subscription only complex smart  home control is available to me.

I have tried with both wifi location on and off, same problem.

The funniest thing is that Google says

We have upgraded the “Home” and “Away” automations to the new automation editor,

but instead the old home/away routine are still in the shape of old routines with ola routine editor

No wonder that presence sensing is bugged now. It's winter, heating is on but apps detects me away, runs the old away routine (that I cannot even delete) and heating is turned off.

I had to create a new automations that warns me with a push notification when I am detected as away so that if instead I'm home, I can turn on the heating again setting house to at home.

You'll just have to wait for it to be rolled out to you.

I wasn't expecting Ask Home to be available to me until next year as I live in Australia.

P.S.

Did you know that you can still use the old personal and household automations?

This is expected behavior in the v4.3 rollout. Pre-existing HOME and AWAY routines remain in the old editor, and Google hasn’t provided a way to automatically migrate them. New routines use the new editor.

Ok thanks, this is clear.

So the only way to have home/away automation out of the box is to use the old home/away routines with old editor. In theory I could create new automations that do the same as home/away routine using the new editor, but they would be a duplicate (since I cannot delete the old ones) and wouldn't be integrated with the switch on top-left if the home page (where you can select manually if you at at home or away).

Guess what?

Today my former routines have been replaced by new automations: they kept the same name but the new editor.

One strange thing: the action list was empty but still working...

I re-edit them and I found something strange: now thermostat can be set to a specific temp or off,but when off it really goes to off while with routines was going to eco

This is actually expected right now — Google hasn’t fully migrated existing Home/Away routines to the new automation editor yet, even though the announcement makes it sound immediate.

What’s happening:

Pre-v4.3 Home/Away routines are still stored as “legacy routines,” so they stay locked in the old editor.

New routines you create in v4.3 use the new editor because they’re created under the new automation system.

The migration of old Home/Away routines is rolling out on Google’s backend, not just through the app update — so some users get the upgrade immediately, others don’t.

What you can do:

There’s no manual way to force migration, and legacy Home/Away routines can’t be deleted yet.

If you want the new editor right away, recreate your Home and Away routines as new automations.

Otherwise, wait for Google’s backend rollout — once your account is migrated, the old Home/Away routines will be auto-converted.

So nothing is broken; your account just hasn’t received the backend migration yet.

Well I e thing is broken for sure: I am.at home and many times per day Google home app switches me to away. And Google support is clueless.
