Nest Protect Batteries - have had device for a few years all ok but now batteries exhaust quickly.

I have had a Nest protect smoke alarm for several years and for the first few years i only need to change the battery once a year but recently i am having to change the battery every few months.  The installation has not changed - its in the same place and has had no alarms.  

I have tried replacing with different sets of new batteries several times but still the same problem.

Can someone help me with this please ?

did you replace it with Lithium batteries? don't put Alkalines on it
