Nest Protect Illuminates In The Middle Of The Night

Deeeenice

It’s been happening for over 2 years now. Normally the illuminate function works just fine when we walk by at night. No issues there. But the past couple of years it will randomly illuminate in the middle of the night like around 3, 3:30am. Random times. I tell everybody I have a ghost because no one is awake (besides me) and I’m not sitting there moving. How can I fix this because it freaks me out when it does.

Hi Deeeenice,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community and for sharing with us what's happening to your Nest Protect. Pathlight is sensitive to you and your pets. Both Protect and Detect activity sensors look for anyone in the room — and that can include Fluffy. Just turn Pathlight off with the Nest app if it’s coming on when you don’t want it to.

Hit this link for more information.

Regards,
Emerson

Thanks Emerson. We don’t have any pets or pests in the house and no one is walking in the hallways as it’s in the middle of the night. Not sure what else could be causing them to turn on.

Hello Deeeenice,

We appreciate you getting back to us and for sharing with us your update. You may try performing a safety check

Give these steps a try:

Try performing a safety check.

  • On your Nest Protect: press the Nest button. The blue light should turn on and it will speak to you.
  • When it says "Press to test", press the button a second time.

With the Nest app on your mobile device: If you have at least one 2nd gen Nest Protect in your home, you can run a Safety Checkup with the Nest app.

  • Sign into your account in the Nest app.
  • Select your Nest Protect on the home screen.
  • Tap Checkup at the bottom of the screen.

In case you’re still getting the same issue, you may reset it to the factory default. Remember that after the reset all the history will get removed as well. Then, check its behavior and give us your feedback here.

Regards,

Emerson

Hey Deeeenice,

Just one quick final check in here since activity has slowed down. We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let us know.

Thanks,
Emerson
