Nest Protect - Not responding after batteries replaced

I had one of my three Nest Protects require its regular battery change.  Once I took out the six AAs out of there with freshly charged Li batteries, I was unable to reconnect the device back to my network.  Here are the sequence of events:

- Removed 'dead' batteries

- Replaced with freshly charges AA batteries

- Pressed the middle Nest button; no light (yellow or blue) appears

I have removed it from my Home, attempted to re-add it (when I am right next to an assisting Nest and my router/modem) but it does not recognize it.  More specifically, I can press the centre button on my assisting Nest and the blue light appears but when I go to engage the Nest in question, there is no blue ring that appears when I press the centre button.  Obviously, this won't let me re-add the device back to my Home.

I've looked on many blog posts and I haven't seen anyone encounter the same issue.  It's a gen 2 Protect and less than 3-4 years old.

Any thoughts here?

Do I understand correctly that is at no time any type of ring light on the Protect that you replaced batteries?  If that is the case please check that the batteries have been installed correctly and/or that batteries are indeed good.  Check them with a voltmeter if you have one.

Yes, you are correct.  The batteries are isntalled correctly and are in good working order.  Voltmeter also tells me so.  What can next steps be?

Hello NickyStaxx,

Thanks for posting here in the community forum. I’m sorry to hear your Nest Protect 2nd generation is not responding after replacing the batteries. Don’t worry; let's see what I can do to get it working smoothly again by checking these steps.

  • Please try to clean the smoke alarm terminals before installing the batteries.
  • Hold down the center button of your device for about ten seconds or more to perform a factory reset.
  • Try to be close to your router to pair the smoke alarm with your Nest app.

For additional information, check out this article related to this topic: Replace Nest Protect's batteries.

Please keep me posted to get further information.

Best regards,

Daniel

I've done all of these things and I'm still not able to get this working. I've followed all the Google steps and have read in enough forums and still in the same spot.

Please help!

Please clarify if there is any indication of life from the unit.  A light circle of any color, any verbal announcements, etc.  When you hold down the NEST button for ten seconds of so, does it describe the unit software revision or is it totally mute?  If there is nothing then the unit is not getting power.  Look closely at the center ring for a dim green LED blinking.  Is this battery only, or wired+battery?
