Nest Protect overheating

shirleyfisher
Community Member

My mother in law is 89... when my wife took her home last night the Nest Protect was chirping indicating low battery. I asked her to bring the unit home to me, which she did. The three batteries on the left hand side were red hot... I took them out and left them outside. I have ordered replacement Ever ready  lithium batteries, but am concerned about putting them in to a unit that has behaved in this way.

I’ve had this issue as well, twice. Google eventually replaced my units but it took quite a lot of checking in with them to get it done. I suggest that, in addition to continuing to follow up with Google for a replacement, you should take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

I did this after someone suggested in another thread and google appeared to be more responsive after my complaint was published and sent to them by the CPSC.

I would look for another brand to replace this with. Kidde makes one with more features (lile air quality monitoring) that works in Google Home.

These batteries hot enough to cause burns or start a fire has been reported dozens of times before by users. Google has not shown any interest in finding to root cause of this issue or acknowledging it is a problem beyond possibly warrantying a unit. (Check the expiration date on the one you get back.)

Report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission as it is a commonly reported issue that Google has failed to address or acknowledge internally. https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

If your Nest Protect is experiencing overheating issues, it's important to address the situation promptly to ensure safety. Here are some steps you can take:

  1. Immediate Actions:

    • Disconnect Power: If you notice the Nest Protect is overheating, disconnect it from power immediately. This may involve turning off the breaker or removing the batteries if it's a battery-powered model.
  2. Ventilation:

    • Ensure that the Nest Protect is installed in an area with proper ventilation. If it's in an enclosed space, consider relocating it to an area with better airflow.
  3. Check for Obstructions:

    • Make sure there are no obstructions around the Nest Protect that could impede airflow. Ensure that vents are clear and unobstructed.
  4. Update Firmware:

    • Ensure that your Nest Protect has the latest firmware. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates to address potential issues. Check the Nest app or website for firmware updates.
  5. Contact Nest Support:

    • If the overheating issue persists, contact Nest support immediately. Nest has customer support services that can provide guidance on troubleshooting or arrange for a replacement if needed.
  6. Replace Batteries:

    • If your Nest Protect is battery-powered, ensure that the batteries are in good condition. Replace them with new, high-quality batteries.
  7. Temperature and Humidity Levels:

    • Nest Protects are designed to operate within certain temperature and humidity ranges. Make sure your device is installed within the specified environmental conditions.
  8. Check for Recalls:

    • Periodically check for any recalls or safety notices related to your Nest Protect model. Manufacturers may issue recalls to address safety concerns.

Remember that addressing issues related to overheating is crucial for the safety of your home. If you are unable to resolve the problem through the steps mentioned, do not hesitate to reach out to Nest customer support or the manufacturer for assistance. Always prioritize safety when dealing with electronic devices, and if there is any immediate danger, contact emergency services.

Hello. I'm having the same problem with my Nest Protect Smoke and CO2 detector. Got the low battery beep. After opening compartment, one of the batteries was extremely hot (slightly burned finger before realizing how hot it was) and there was a smoldering smell. Do not want to put new batteries in since this seems like a fire hazard. I filled out the form (from the link) well over a week ago and have not received any response by email.

I am experiencing the exact same issue. My Google Nest Protect is not even 12 months old.
