After about a year, my Nest Protects just started losing network connections, requiring a physical uninstall, followed by a factory reset, followed by a new setup, and finally a physical reinstall. I've contacted support, but they only provide copy/paste responses - no actual solutions. And Google won't take the return for the 5 detectors that are now just expensive "dumb" detectors.
If you get a Nest Protect, either make your peace with the fact that these devices are not reliably network compatible, or assume you will be on a ladder at least once a year hard-restarting/re-initializing it. And if you have more than one in your home, multiply that effort by the number of detectors.
I'm really bummed about this - I thought Nest Protect would be a great product. Turns out, it's nothing but trouble.

Google has really shown that they're just running a skeleton crew on the protects, so that they can keep selling them and make money, eithout any actual maintenance or development.
The overall lack of responsiveness or support (or even acknowledgement of issues) by Google of these LIFE SAFETY devices shows neglect and reckless disregard and has successfully eroded customer trust.
I think our best bet as a customer base is to make these problems known outside Google, so a trend can be established. Could you please take a moment to report this issue to the Consumer Product Safety Commission at: https://www.saferproducts.gov/IncidentReporting

Thanks for the suggestion - I will certainly report the issue. And thanks for providing some validation for my frustration. It's nice not to be the only voice in the wilderness... 😉
