I have the same issue. I own 9 Protects and I’ve probably cracked the plates on five of them just attaching them to ceiling wiring boxes. It takes almost no force at all to do this, and when you are turning a screw that goes into a plastic outlet box to hold the Nest mounting plate in place, the plate’s screw holes break off before you even realize the screw is making contact with the plate. I just spent an hour trying to reconnect two Protects to my WiFi and had to reset the Protects, remove the batteries and disconnect the power before they would work. When I finally succeeded, one of the plates broke when I reattached its Protect. I could use help in getting a replacement. Thanks.
