Still beeping after installing new batteries

Our Nest Protect started beeping, so we changed the batteries but it is still beeping.   What else could it be?

What kind of beep is it? Check the "when Protect needs your attention" section of this article:

Are you using the required Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA (L91) batteries?

Hello, I’ve changed the batteries to the recommended ones and it’s still chirping once every 60 or so seconds. It doesn’t say it needs to be replaced until 2030. What could be the issue? Is there a help desk that can be called? This is very frustrating

Hi Cori1,

I’m sorry to hear you’re having Nest Protect battery issue. Let's sort this out.

Since you've already replaced the batteries of your Nest Protect with the recommended ones, can you check for its battery level on the app?

  • Open the Nest app.
  • Select the Nest Protect you want to check.
  • The battery status and the last time the battery level was checked by Protect’s Self Test should appear on this page.

I'll look forward to your response.

I appreciate your help, @SGoodhue.

Thanks,

Zoe

Why should there be required batteries.  Makes no sense.   What is wrong with a fresh package of Duracell batteries??

Strictly speaking, I believe any Lithium AA (L91) batteries will suffice.

Thanks for the clarification. So alkaline batteries such as Duracell won’t work at all or just not last as long?

It's designed to be used with  Lithium AA (L91) batteries. If you use any other battery type, they will drain faster and not perform as expected.

I DO use the batteries you mentioned~  but it beeps, as I said - after a short time - I test the batteries - they are fully charged; I put them back in and then it works again!!!  The batteries are fine - but I hate to keep taking them out/putting them back in!!!

Hello.  Has there been a response to this?  I use the suggested batteries as well and they drain fast.  I am replacing them every 3 months.  Is there a problem with my nest protect

One of my nest thermostats beeps with good batteries..after 2 weeks or so; I have to take out the batteries (they are fine) and when I put them in again, it’s ready to go!!!  Why does it beep unexpectedly when the batteries are still good?

Thanks

Hi @Trudijane We're not talking about Nest Thermostat here, we're discussing Nest Protect. To avoid any confusion, I'd suggest you create your own new topic so experts can support you directly.

There is not a 'topic' in the list for Nest Protect so I didn't know what to choose!!  I wrote a new post with the subject 'Nest Protector!

The problem seems to be that the Nest is designed to ONLY use the expensive lithium batteries.  All other types wear out quickly.  If you look on the back of the product they say in very small print that the lithium ones are required.  I think Google/Nest cut some kind of back room deal with Energizer to force us to buy their expensive batteries.  The lithium ones are supposed to be very long lasting if that is any consolation.  We changed to Lithium and no problems since.
