Hello @chrisw123,

Thanks for posting in the community.

It's great that you're looking to install your Nest thermostat in your new apartment.

While some Nest thermostats can work with only two wires (typically labeled "R" and "W"), it depends on the specific model you have and your heating system.

Here's how you can determine compatibility:

Identify your Nest Thermostat model: Look for the model name or number on the back of your thermostat or on the packaging.

Check the Nest thermostat compatibility tool: Visit the Nest website and use their compatibility tool to see if your specific model works with two-wire systems.

Here are some additional things to consider:

Current wiring: Double-check the labels on your current thermostat wires. "R" typically refers to power, and "W" refers to heat.

If your Nest thermostat isn't compatible with two wires:

Don't worry! There might be other options. Here are a couple:

  • Nest Thermostat E: This Nest model is specifically designed for low-voltage heating systems that only use two wires. You can check its compatibility on the Nest website.
  • Professional installation: If your current wiring requires a C-wire (common wire) for your Nest thermostat to function, you might need a professional electrician to install one.

No matter what, I recommend not proceeding with the installation until you've confirmed compatibility.

Here is a resource that might be helpful:

I hope this information helps!

Best regards,

Jorge.
