Airwave triggers short cycling?

I experienced multiple times that when Airwave is on, the outdoor unit shuts off only a few seconds after turning on. I then have to turn Airwave off until I get an answer. I tried searching online and it seems no one has been talking about this problem. Am I the only one has this issue?

However, I think instead of implementing this Airwave feature, it could be simplified by just implementing a feature to set a fan schedule to run a certain amount of time after cooling is done.

Currently the fan schedule can only set to start at a certain time. I wish there will be a feature to set it to continue or restart to run 5-10 more minutes after cooling is done.

Hi hxin,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I'm sorry to hear that the Airwave and outdoor unit shut off only a few seconds after the Nest thermostat was turned on. I'm here to help!

The Airwave feature is only available on the Nest Learning thermostat. Could you please confirm if this is your model of thermostat?

Since the outdoor unit for cooling shuts off in a short period, I'd like to confirm if the cooling is able to work properly without turning on the Airwave feature. I also suggest the following steps to isolate the inconvenience with the Airwave feature:

  • Perform a hard reset: To do this, press and hold the thermostat down until the screen turns off (about 10 seconds), then release.
  • Try turning off and on the Airwave feature. For instructions, refer to this article: Learn about Airwave and how to change settings.
  • Test the cooling mode to see if the Airwave is able to work as expected.

If these steps don't resolve the inconvenience with the Airwave, consider performing a factory reset on the Nest thermostat and setting it up again. Monitor the thermostat for at least 48 hours to see if the problem persists. For reference, you can check out this article: Restart or reset a Nest thermostat.

Please keep me posted.

Hi Jenniffer,

Thanks for your reply. I don't see the wording "Nest Learning" on either Google Home and Nest app, but they show my thermostat model as "NEST_THERMOSTAT_DISPLAY_3.6" and "Display-3.6".

By turning off Airwave, I still notice short cycling once in a few days. However, with Airwave on, it seems guaranteed the short cycling will happen immediately. I turned Airwave on once when I first installed the thermostat, and the second time was a few days ago, each time, within 10 minutes, I heard both outdoor unit and the fan stopped for a few seconds and then restarted.

I didn't do the hard reset yet, but with the Airwave off, the cooling is working okay.

Sometimes I manually turn the fan back on immediately after cooling stops from Nest app. I am thinking it would save energy by a similar concept to Airwave but I can't set such a schedule to keep fan on after cooling stops.
The concept to save energy is similar, but the difference between Airwave and the ability to set such a schedule as I suggested is whether users have full control and knows exactly what the timing is. Therefore, if I have a choice, I prefer to keep fan on after cooling than Airwave, which is to turn outdoor unit off a bit earlier.

Could you make a feature request, that instead of Airwave, can we have a feature that to be able to set a fan schedule to let the fan continue to or immediately restart to run for a few minutes whenever cooling finishes?

Thanks,

Hi @hxin,

Thanks for following up! I understand how inconvenient this situation can be with the Airwave mode. Let's try to fix this!

Based on the information you've provided, it seems you have a Nest Learning thermostat. Since you're experiencing short cycling even with Airwave mode on or off, I'd like to gather some additional details:

  • What type of HVAC system do you have (heat pump, conventional system, etc.)?
  • When was the last maintenance check for your HVAC system?
  • Has there been any recent changes or upgrades to your HVAC system?
  • Does short cycling occur when using heating only?

In the meantime, I suggest the following:

  • Check the air filter. Your HVAC system requires good airflow to operate properly. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow over the cooling coils, causing them to freeze and shut down the system.
  • Ensure the wires are fully inserted into the terminal and the connector buttons are securely pushed down. This guarantees proper wire connections. I also recommend cleaning the wires with a paper towel, as dust can sometimes prevent the base from recognizing the wires. You can check out this article for more information: Troubleshoot strange heating or cooling behavior. Important: Before touching any wires, turn off the power to your HVAC system at the breaker box.
  • Then, check the power readings by going to Settings > Technical Info > Power on your Nest Learning thermostat and provide me with the VOC, VIN, and IIN values.

Additionally, I understand the value of having a fan schedule to keep the fan running after cooling stops. While this feature isn't currently available, we encourage you to provide feedback on this to help us improve our products.

Please keep me posted.
