App says its on; Nest thermostat says it’s off

I woke up again this morning to a cold house. I checked the phone app and it showed that the furnace was on, but it wasn’t. The thermostat showed the furnace off. I had to manually set the temp. This is a similar problem to one in a thread regarding use of Alexa. The only thing I tried was signing out and back into Google accounts. Anything else seems useless due to the documentation in the other threads. Possibly a coding issue in a recent Google patch?

I have a similar problem.  For the first time this year, the temperature dropped into the 40's last night.  The nest thermostat is set at 72° and has worked perfectly with the air conditioning.  But the temp inside the house was reading 66° on the nest thermostat, however the heat did not come on.  It's not the "eco" setting on the thermostat because I have that feature disabled.  Still haven't figured out how to turn on the heat.  We didn't have the Nest thermostat last winter and we do not have a heat pump.  There are no answers on the Google Nest site.

I’m thinking it is either a coding or a server problem. Whatever it is, from everything posted in this forum, it is a Google issue.

It was USER ERROR in my case.  I set up the thermometer and forgot about it back in April of this year.  I "assumed" it worked like my old thermometer and automatically switched from cool to heat when needed.  Well, it does if you set it up that way.  Open the nest app on your phone. Tap on your nest thermostat icon.  Then on the bottom of the screen, tap on Mode.  The options are "heat" "cool" heat-cool" and off.  If the mode is turned off, the thermostat does nothing.  If the mode is "heat", it only controls the heat and not the A/C.  If the mode is "cool" it only controls the A/C and not the heat (that was where mine was set - I may have done that as it was installed in warm weather, or that might be the default).  When I tapped "Heat-Cool" the heat came on.

That may have nothing to do with the problem you and others are experiencing, but that was my problem.  I first contacted the "chat" help on line and  they wanted me to take the thermostat off the wall and send them a photo of the wiring on back of the unit.  I said no way, I'll figure it out myself.

It is now too warm here to know if anything is different with ours. Probably won’t know until this weekend when the weather is colder. We’ve had ours for over a year. So, I do know about those settings. However, I was of the understanding that “Heat-Cool” setting was for those environments that may change quickly from a warm day when the AC was needed to a cool night when heat was needed. Maybe that is you. Regardless, I do manually turn the Nest back and forth each season to either heat or cool using the thermostat or the app. Good luck!
