Away mode triggers Eco settings, to run at a lower temp to save money.  Eco heating can be set from 40º-70º.  So if it is really cold outside where you live, it's possible it ran your furnace for that many times to maintain your Eco temp.  Check your Eco settings to see what the low temp limit is set for your Nest and adjust if it's too high.
