Basic Nest (no learning) changes temperature on its own

dritterw
Community Member

I wish I could say the temperature change is consistent but it is not. Sometimes it cools to lower than our scheduled temp, sometimes it increases temp to ECO setting, again in conflict with our scheduled temp. Some days it doesn't happen at all, other days it happens 2-3 times. Presence sensing turned off. What else can I try?

Do you have a schedule set up? Might be working off that even if you set a temp that you want it to be it will revert to schedule when it’s time. If you want to use & have a schedule set up it’s fine but you have to double check on the other features that might be on example eco setting on will put it in eco mode if no motion is sensed. Cool to dry on will turn on the AC & possibly lower the temp to achieve that if you have your temp set little on higher side. Early on will turn on AC to achieve set temp earlier than your scheduled time & temp settings. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Interesting - I never saw in the manual that thermostat will move to ECO setting if there’s no motion. So if I just go through my set schedule and relabel all ECO settings to “custom,” the problem will go away?

No idea what “cool to dry is?”

There’s a limit to the temp settings to in eco mode. Cool to dry on is an option that will turn on AC to lower humidity level in your place at times it will lower setting beyond the temp you set. good luck.

Thank you - yes, I still need help! Your advice was not helpful, maybe because I have the basic Nest. There is no ECO in my settings, nor Nest Sense. Your advice may be helpful for someone with a different version of Nest. Can you offer different guidance?

Hello folks,

I wanted to ensure that everything was covered here.

Thanks for looking into this, Zoe.

@dritterw and @dritterw1, I'm checking back in. Were you able to do the steps above? I'd be glad to hear from you; we'd like to make sure everything is working. Lastly, if you have the Google Home app, please check the Routines settings. This might also be a possible reason for an unexpected temperature change. Look for any thermostat actions available and remove them or edit them if needed.

Best regards,
Mark

I followed the instructions. They said to “restart the thermostat” but didn’t say when to previously turn it off. Anyway, we shall see … the only thing I changed was to turn off was “allow this home to use phone locations” even though I’d already turned off “phone location.”

Stay tuned!

Hey dritterw,

Thanks for the update. Turning off the phone's location for the Nest app or the Google Home app is also part of the Home and Away Assist/Routines features. This usually triggers the Eco Temperature to activate, but in the meantime, observe its behavior and keep us posted if that helps.

Mark

So, with that setting on or off, ECO still turns on if no one walks past the thermostat for some period of time. Basically, not fixed yet. I want to come home to a cool house!!

Hello there,

I've got you. To confirm, have you managed to check the Routines settings in the Google Home app? Please make sure that no thermostat actions are created that allow the Eco Temperature to activate unexpectedly.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Mark

I sincerely hope "you got me!" I found a setting in Google Home - Automations and set it to do nothing when everyone's away. I checked "activity" and saw that the thermostat moved to ECO mode at 8:01 am because "everyone left the house." At that time, I was watching TV and my husband was showering ... The ECO was supposed to turn on at 8:45am. It is now 9:25am and it's still on "Comfort." My thermostat has a mind of its own!

Hey there,

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. To confirm, have you cleared the Temperature Preference for Comfort from the steps shared above? Based on the Activity, it appears that there's a programmed temperature that overlaps the schedule. Try editing it to ensure it only follows your target schedule. Also, if you invited your home members to the Google Home app, their mobile phones contributed to the Presence Sensing. I'd suggest checking their Google Home app and following the same settings as on the primary phone.

Mark
